I would like to know how that 20x30 comes out! I usually take my camera and my phone when I go out. I’ve never had the phone pics printed. And I get made fun of a lot because of my Nikon D5 and lenses are heavy! Yet I do get most excellent pictures. Especially sports 2 Eyes’s and a ball if you know what I mean and tack sharp!

I will post my thoughts later today after I pick up the print.
No matter how it looks, I know now I won't give up my full frame DSLR's and my gold-ringed lenses.
I get made fun of too--but at my age, it doesn't bother me.

Today's smart phones are equal in quality to most observers, if you are printing 11x14 or smaller. It depends on the nature of the subject. In situations where you are using the default phone camera setting (wide angle) and the subject is immobile, you don't need control of DOF , shutter, and iris. You cannot say one choice is ALWAYS better than the other. The beauty of my smart phone is that it is always in my pocket ready to shoot, while my two DSLRs are left home, unless I have a specific assignment or plan. The photo attached was taken with an iPhone SE. (12mpx.)

Maybe you're just too sensitive.

I was on a motorcycle ride last weekend and at a rest stop I pulled out my Nikon D750 to take a photo of the group and got laughed at for using a real camera! The smart phones are taking over the younger generation.

How do you carry the camera? Backpack? Saddle bag? Tank Bag? Do you put padding around it to protect it from vibration?

Cell phones are really good these days. IQ and color are excellent. But they are fully automatic cameras. With a cell phone you don't control over shutter speed, or DOF or ISO they are selected by the camera and there are cases where you want to have control over these parameters. Sports shots. Long exposures. Portraits with shallow DOF. Come to mind. But for a group snapshot with friends. A modern cell phone will do just as good a job, and you can share the snap instantly.

The only reason I didn't carry the DSLR on the motorcycle was because it was just too big. Flip phone cameras were lousy then, so I carried a small P&S camera that I could carry around my neck on a cord or in my jacket pocket. It was instantly available to take a picture. But I certainly wouldn't be embarrassed to take the big gun.

Recently a stranger laughed at me because I was out walking around listening to music on a portable CD player. "You still use one of those? Ha, ha!"

Sometimes, and sometimes just for fun, I'll pull over where there's a group and set up a 4x5. That usually keeps things quiet.

Sometimes at a gas station I'll open my hood and trunk on my wife's Porshce 986 Boxster. The kids come over and say "where is the engine". LOL

Each year, when I attend the Nationals (or in this year's case, the Worlds,) people always ask me to take pictures of their team with my Nikon DSLR even though everyone runs around with their smartphones.

It is my contention that the smartphone is very adverse to picture composition and there is just too much movement when held at arms length to take nice crisp pictures. When you've got nothing else, it's ok, but a real camera is still light-years ahead. If you have it with you, of course.

I've been laughed at for using a tripod- but there are a lot of things that using a tripod
allows me to do that a person without a tripod cannot do.

Behind their laughter is a lack of knowledge of photography.
I did this a while ago with one of my grandsons: "You're old-fashioned, Oma!" "Well, I'm sorry, bud, I don't even own a smartphone, I use and old-fashioned flip-phone!"
We then each took three photos of the same three subjects - I won hands-down and grandson was convinced that a smartphone is handy, but the photos not nearly as good as those with a real camera!
Now challenge them to compare their photos with yo... (show quote)

If you are viewing the images on a phone you might not be able to tell the difference. The people most biased against smart phone cameras have no idea how capable they have become.
