Recently got a nikon d5500 & Tamron 18-270 lens. But have kept my two nikon p520's as back up & for the longer zoom. Really enjoy them. Only complaint was the unavailabity of filters that could be used on the cameras. Recently found an adapter that works with a filter and no vignetting. So far so good. Just can't find a lens hood for them that really works. Don't know if that situation has been resolved with the p900. Would like to know if someone has dealt with that issue. Who knows. I might would get rid of the p520's & replace them with a p900 if a cpl & hood would work on it.

I believe the P520 lens dia is 67mm, if I am right Amazon has complete filter kits (4) and a lens hood for about $45.;

I've got a Nikon Coolpix P520 which I now use as a back-up camera. It has a x 42 optical zoom which is quite adequate and do use it. I think it is now discontinued, although they are still available in camera shops here in the UK. The only drawback I find is that it only takes about 200 shots per battery charge; less if you use the zoom a lot. I now have a DSLR but, if I had the money would get rid of the P520 and get the P900 as a back up and for those shots where you need a superzoom. Here is a pic I took with the P520...Hope this helps Grace

I also had a P520 for a couple of years and for the most part was very happy with it - on holidays in Scotland where I took tons of pictures the battery would last about two days between charges. My main complaint about it was that it took several seconds to get ready to take a picture when first turned on. I gave it to my daughter when I got my 7200 but, being a Mother of Multitudes, she finds her cell phone camera to be more convenient. I think the P520 will eventually be handed down to her almost 11yo son who is showing interest in photography. It's a nice little camera.

True about time delay, the P series all do that, I have a P100, and P600, and definitely my D5200 is faster.

Now that you have ordered your P900, SpyderJan, be sure to get Alexander White's wonderful instruction book about it. Far better than the manual that Nikon provides. You can get it on Amazon.

Thanks, Tet68.
I have the filter & adapter. The Tiffen cpl works great. So far have only found the tube lens hood which has a tendency to vignette at Long zooms. I have a petal hood for my d5500 & like how it works.

I moved up from a Coolpix P90 to a Coolpix P900 last April...I love it. After using the P90 for ~5 years, I knew I wanted to upgrade. After a trip to Ireland, I wasn't satisfied with my long shots of shore birds. I am a photographer that walks and photographs anything from a bee gathering pollen from a thistle to trying to capture a warbler singing at the top of a tree. So I need to be able to zoom in then zoom out...and I don't want to carry a lot of gear. (Note: I usually have my dog on leash - a waist leash) My husband is hunting for birds and butterflies with his binoculars, so again, I need the ability to quickly switch distances. We also are traveling more, and wanted a good camera to serve multiple purposes.
I love the Birdwatching preset since it keeps the center in focus, so works great on insects as well as birds.
I know I have a lot to learn...have been playing around with the aperture settings, but really want to be able to quickly take photographs...trying to catch a butterfly feeding on a dandelion 10 feed away, and be able to ID it at home...means I have to be able to take quick clear shots. I just retired from being a science teacher so love ID and creating documentation of my sightings...sometimes that "perfect" picture may not be in sharp focus, but I can ID my observations.
I guess you have to decide what your aim is...sadly it is often just as easy to use my Iphone if I am just taking snapshots of my grandkids helping my husband cook in the kitchen.
I am really impressed with the light gathering ability of my P900 compared to the P90...I am sure there are more sensitive sensors out there, but for the price, convenience, and functionality, I would start with the P900.
I am adding some pictures...I have never shared before, but wanted to help explain why I love this camera.

Eastern Common Yellowthroat Warbler - First year Fall male...not perfect lighting, but this bird was at least 15" away and hopping about in the foliage. I can clearly ID him, and I still think this is a great shot.

I never leave the house without mine...in fact 2 cameras, my Sony a6000 if I need a fast camera, my P900 if I see something too far away. If I had to take just one with me, it would be the P900. I had the P150, and the P600 before the P900 and loved them all! I say go for it. I don't think you'll be sorry.

Have you ever used the Remote Control on the P900? I just got the Nikon ML-L3 remote and put the camera in remote mode, but the shutter wouldn't fire. I don't know how to verify that the remote is firing or whether the camera is receiving the signal. Any suggestions?

Unfortunately, I did the same thing and guess I gave up as I very rarely use the P900 where I can't do just as well with a tripod or a monopod or sitting it on a beanbag The VR is, to me, exceptional

Thanks Robert. It's no big thing, except I hate to pay for something that is of no use to me.

I am getting ready to move into the 21st Century and get my first real Digital Camera. I have always been a Nikon man. I can't afford to get the top of the line camera, and the prospect of lenses and accesories is daunting. I could probably afford a D5300 with 2 zoom lenses, but then I saw this Coolpix. Look at the optical zoom ratio. Has anyone used a Coolpix? Would you consider it a good first digital camera? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

In my opinion the P900 is not as good a camera for starter as the D5300. It would be much more difficult to use than the D5300 and the 83x zoom is going to make it's more difficult.

I heard there wasn't a remote for the P900...do you have a link for the one you bought? I would be interested in one, but haven't looked into it. Thanks for any info. I have used the 10 sec timer a few times, but not frequently enough to expand on it.
