I still like my P900 for the way that I take photos. See my post above. That is what I find so wonderful about the camera world...there is something for everyone!

In my opinion the P900 is not as good a camera for starter as the D5300. It would be much more difficult to use than the D5300 and the 83x zoom is going to make it's more difficult.

I am aware of the limitations of the P900, but it has been good for me so far.

If you are an experience photographer you can certainly get the P900 to work for you. For someone who just started it would be difficult.

I heard there wasn't a remote for the P900...do you have a link for the one you bought? I would be interested in one, but haven't looked into it. Thanks for any info. I have used the 10 sec timer a few times, but not frequently enough to expand on it.

This is the one I bought:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Nikon-ML-L3-MLL3-Wireless-Remote-Control-D610-D5500-D5300-D3300-D3400-D7200-1-V3/112329912727?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649

There were a lot of sellers for this one. It does say it is compatible with Coolpix several models. The P900 does have an option in the self-timer menu for IR Remote. So I am not sure why it isn't working.

I am not a novice. I have been shooting film since the 60's. This is my first foray into digital though.

I went on google search and saw a lot of links to explore this issue. Does sound like there is a infrared remote that works...sounds like there are some issues with the non-Nikon brands. Don't have time to look into this more, but at least it opens my mind up to new possibilities.
Thanks for the feed back.

I have the P100 and P600 and was told when I bought them that the ML3 would work with them, NOT SO! NO "IR" REMOTE SENSOR on the camera! P900? Not sure if it has one either!

Just a note! I didn't like the ML3 on my D5200 either, but love the SHUTTERBUG ll. Works perfectly, Everytime! Did not see if it will attach to P Series cameras, maybe tomorrow I play with it!

I was in Vietnam during the Tet of 68 but I don't think I am a Tet68survivor. I was only 12 at the time.

You need to turn on the remote option in the menu system, and then the remote only works from in front of the camera. Will not work from behind camera, nor from the sides.

Recently got a nikon d5500 & Tamron 18-270 lens. But have kept my two nikon p520's as back up & for the longer zoom. Really enjoy them. Only complaint was the unavailabity of filters that could be used on the cameras. Recently found an adapter that works with a filter and no vignetting. So far so good. Just can't find a lens hood for them that really works. Don't know if that situation has been resolved with the p900. Would like to know if someone has dealt with that issue. Who knows. I might would get rid of the p520's & replace them with a p900 if a cpl & hood would work on it.
Recently got a nikon d5500 & Tamron 18-270 len... (show quote)

Over a year ago I have decided that I need a real camera so I can get out of the AUTO mode and enjoy what cell phones and point-n-shoots can hardly accomplish, like night shots etc. At that time I was planning a big trip with a lot of traveling and especially hiking so size and weight did matter. I did exactly the same thing you did - D5500 + T. 18-270mm. Not too big, not too heavy, zoom x 1.5, pretty fine walk around combo. I was looking at Sony a6300, but the price with some decent lens was close to 2000 - almost a double of what I paid for mine. I know I will probably get showered with arguments about mirrorless this and that, but the truth is that besides using my phone I have never really done any photography before and spending twice as much money didn't make much sense to me at the moment.
My next purchase few months later was Sigma 150-600mm which travels with me all the time, was almost 300 cheaper than Tamron and makes me happy. I know it's not top of the top of the line setup, but these things are way more advanced than I am and the results get better over the time with more experience coming from practice, research and UHH.
About the reach: taking pictures at 600mm x1.5 and cropping in PP still makes things looking better than most small sensor mega zooms I have seen.
If I could find FZ1000 in the store anywhere in the 200 mile radius I would like try what it does and how it feels with it's Leica glass, 4k etc , but they were nowhere to be found so I just stopped thinking about it.
Just my $ 0.02...
