Personally, I liked your article. I am very much an amateur and when I post a photo, I welcome good constructive criticism, but not the brow beating that some give out. I want to learn more about how to take good photos and how much PP needs to be done. This is why I joined UHH, to learn from those that have the know how. I am too old to sit in a class room and take lessons, and being almost totally deaf, it wouldn't do any good anyhow. So thanks to those who really want to help and to the grumps...hope your day gets better.

Please correct me if I'm wrong but I think your point may have been that it's not necessarily the message and or the messenger. But the delivery and or intent of their critique?

This post was a good experiment for me. A quick count yielded theses statistics: 11 members simply joined the conversation- some agreed with me some did not- fair enough! 5 members wrote sarcastic and snarky comments that really has nothing to do with the topic- they don't like my writing style- too long a post- fell asleep etc. OK- I can take a critique. 10 folks just wrote "stupid" inane stuff"- I don't like the word "stupid" but I couldn't think of a more appropriate term- theses people just squabbled among themselves hurling back and forth insults at each other.

Admittedly, I am not a professional writer- just a professional photographer. I could use an editor- any volunteers?

I kinda thought this site was about photography, not literature or creative writing. My post was not about "gear" per se. Too many folks here are so preoccupied with equipment that they forget about photography. I have patiently read into some of the articles written by some of my critics here- extolling the virtues of Canon and Nikon and bragging about their vast inventories of equipment. I can read the ads in the photo magazines for that.

"War and Peace" for sure. Looks like the majority of folks here prefer war! Posting in this part of the HOG is a waste of time- at least for me.

Andrew Carnegie once famously stated, "I never learned anything when times were good." I believe that constructive comments, good or bad, can be learning instruments if taken for what they are. If I highly saturate an image to achieve a certain effect, and someone says that the image is oversaturated, well, that's great as it was actually the effect I was seeking! But to jam someone because they ask a "newbie" question or maybe don't carry as sophisticated equipment as others do is just a waste of time, and you wonder if the critics don't have anything better to do than troll this site looking for fodder for their critical cannon? I have received wonderful and helpful advice here, and thank each and every contributor for their input, positive or (constructively) negative. Peace out.

I appreciated your comments, and thank you for taking the time to voice your opinion. And to the flamers out there, maybe another site would be more to your liking, where everything is rainbows and unicorns and everyone agrees with you all the time!

Yes, it's hard to understand how people can get so upset and make such nasty comments over camera gear.
That's what I thought when I commented a while ago that I don't care for people referring to lenses as "glass". I took a beating for that comment and that is one of the reasons for my signature at the bottom of my posts.

When I post in the gallery, I expect casual comments. If I want a real critique, I'll post in For Your Consideration.

Critiques are fine. But this site has the nastiest responders I've ever read. Way to may people feel the need to respond in nasty, smart-aleck, zero-informational, pointless comments for no obvious reason. Makes me wonder if all phographers have attitude issues. I'm tired of reading all the "meanness" and won't be able to read further unnecessarily -hateful/hurtful comments, because as soon as I post this, I'm outta here. So much for an attempt to learn more about photography....

I agree with the first poster. And, my mother used to say, "It's not WHAT you say but HOW you say it!" I pass this information on to my children all the time. It takes a certain amount of finesse to say things without hurting people.

I wonder how many UHH'ers just don't bother to comment anytime, about anything. I would guess that only a small percentage of our membershop comment at all, and sometimes it's easy to see why. This leads me to wonder how much really beneficial information is being lost to those who need it. Our site appears to be monopolized by a relative few, and a substantial few of those appear to be the bullies. Too bad, too bad.

The idea of calling lenses ", glass" is more of a slang thing, as such it doesn't really bug me. I just get bugged by technically wrong terms like when people call a pickup truck a "car" or a rifle/pistol cartridge a "bullet". 😀

I don't agree. I'm not a beginner, but I have gleaned invaluable information regarding computers and macro, just to name a few and that's in addition to the valuable travel information. Yes, there are a few sarcastic people, but sometimes their response is well-taken. And, yes, there are a handfull of abusive people, so just ignore them. Many of the people who comment are extremely knowledgeable.
