There is an upcoming black and white photo contest, and whether my entries are the same caliber as others, I am going to enter two of the attached photos. The contest is juried, and those that make the cut go on into the contest where the actual winner is determined. I entered my first contest in 1983, won first place, and have never entered one since. I think I'll try again. The minimum size must be 11x14 up to 30x40. These are sized in the 16x20 range.

Buckwheat, for me, none have a compelling subject.
But as a B&W, #2 has the best contrast, detail and sharpness. For me B&W is all about the black and white and how those contrast complement each other. So it's the strongest of them. Maybe it should be cropped stronger though.
I don't have a clear #2.
Good luck

I really like 1. I would like two if it was cropped just above the trunk.

was wondering , but at num 1 if you use only the lower 1/3 , so also 1 and 3 .num 4 could also be interesting .

I think I would get #1 printed on Metal! it will absolutely dazzle!

I like #3 but I think I would have stepped about 3-5 steps to the photographer right and brought the corner of the fence to just shy of the middle. I find the bark of the top rail of the leftmost fence section dominates the photo to much.

Gosh, I stand alone in the cold... to me #1 is boring!

#2 good if you get rid of the sky.. it competes with that wonderful first "story" post. The sky tell me nothing... If it does not add it detracts.

#3 the story does not need the first horizontal fence section.... once it is gone you have an S ... the front section and the long parallel and the the end of the S goes around the road. Exercise in futility to change it.

#4 without question is a work of art to be proud of as-is, is it the sort of things the judges will like... Fantastic Story Fantastic Composition it is wonderful. to hell with the contest judges... you are the judge and have done well. Every time I have pleased my self to my surprise, the CClub judges have give award status points.

So with a top cropped on #2 enter that and also #4 and you have won the show.

I like #1 and #4. I have a thing about those trees. Would 4 be acceptable with the brown in it? It is very artistic, love the expression on her face. Be sure and let us know the outcome!
