I live in the Finger Lakes area. It is beautiful and has lots of photo opportunities. You will also be near the Erie Canal and Niagara Falls. If you plan to visit the Canadian Falls, be sure to have your passports to get back to the US.

Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, PA if you like trains and engineering marvels of the 19th century. Not as neat as it was with 4 tracks, but they have a really nice park there for people to enjoy now.

Best,
Todd Ferguson

Really need to consider Watkins Glen, NY, an hour below Rochester. Great place to photograph. Go to upper parking and work your way down. Shuttle takes you back to upper lot. I'm 72 and going bottom to top would be too strenuous to enjoy the photo ops. Lots of tourists to deal with, but if you are patient you can get some good shots.

I can vote for this too - enjoyed being there. A week day would probably be less crowded.

There's a kingdom up there now?!

Yes Jerry..a Kingdom.

The Northeast Kingdom is the northeast corner of the U.S. state of Vermont, comprising Essex, Orleans and Caledonia counties and having a population at the 2010 census of 64,764. In Vermont, the written term "NEK" is often used. The term "Northeast Kingdom" is attributed to George D. Aiken, former Governor of Vermont and a U.S. senator, who first used the term in a 1949 speech. The area is often referred to by Vermonters simply as "The Kingdom."

Being from western NY I can suggest Watkins Glen, Letchworth State Park, Erie Canal (Lockport, NY, Locks 34 & 35), Niagara Falls, both sides, Old Fort Niagara just a few miles north of the falls. If you want to photograph some great cars, stop at the Pierce Arrow museum in downtown Buffalo. Be sure to stop at some of the wineries in the finger lakes area. If you want to see fall foliage book hotels early.

I live in Ottawa Canada and like to visit the Corning glass museum and science museum. Corning is a nice art friendly town. Down the road is a soaring museum where you can book a ride. Maybe these would appeal to your wife. Watkins Glenn is great for photographs and it is not hard to find a winery where you can sample. Have fun

Hawk Mountain a bit off the PA Turnpike extension, if you are going during migration say September through early November.

Niagara falls is great place to go to but it is not in the finger lakes region. The fall is the best time to visit part of New York. I would find out when peak is for the fall foliage for that region is beautiful on steroids during this time. This region is wine country and is loaded with wineries, so I'd do some research and find a few you'd like to tour. Also, there are many small towns nestled in the rolling hills and many have festivals and activities on week ends. There are also many state parks in the region and one of the best is Letchworth state park (the grand canyon of the east) where the Genessee river flows through south of Rochester. The Genessee is one of the only rivers in the world that flow north; the other being the Nile. I'm not sure but there may be another one in either europe or Asia that flows north too. There are also several bed and breakfast places out in the country that you could stay at too. Internet searching should help a whole lot too since there is so much going on in those finger lake areas during the fall.

Niagara is a must! Bring a "raincoat" for your gear as Cave of Winds and Maid of the Mist are musts! Finger lakes are charming, big wine country too. Vermont is gorgeous. If you're thinking of going around Columbus Day, reservations would be a very good idea as it's peak foliage season.

Wait for Foliage to start. Then replan trip to Vermont and make sure you go to the Northeast Kingdom.

New England isn't really "Finger Lakes, NY", and deserves to be a trip all of its own.

I spent two years at Cornell as a grad student; I didn't appreciate it at the time, but Ithaca NY and Lake Cayuga are worth a day of their own. The Cornell campus is built on the top of a hillside. Cornell does have newer buildings, of course, but it has a bunch of the classic rock buildings you expect to see on an Ivy League campus. There is a canyon {south side of campus?} and a waterfall IIRC. This area is gorgeous much of the year, but late Autumn - early Spring is overcast and kind of gloomy {at least from the POV of a student}

The American side is less spectacular!

Definitely the Northeast Kingdom is a beautiful area. My husband and I went up to Lake Willoughby last year and liked it so much we went back again this spring. Stayed in the Village Inn of East Burke both times. From there we saw not only Lake Willoughby, but also a lot of the surrounding area. Willoughby Falls is in Orleans, VT. Also a place to look for moose in the spring.

Watkins Glen at the southern tip of Seneca Lake is an absolute must. Hike the glen following the stream. You will even walk behind a waterfall. Also, go to Ithaka and see the Cornell University campus. Besides several photogenic spots on the campus including high elevation views of Lake Cayuga, there are canyons with falls and streams on both sides of the campus with many photo ops. One side has Beebe Lake its dam. Below the dam there is rapidly moving canyon stream. On the other side of the campus is Triphammer Falls and the gorge with secondary falls below. There are many waterfalls a short distance from Ithaca. Also, take the drive up the west shore of Lake Cayuga to Taughannock Falls State Park.

These are good suggestions. All of the finger lakes have great scenery, but being accessible is a different story. Ithaca is definitely in a great area.

You didn't say when you might go, but the New England states are beautiful in the fall. Visit Bar Harbor in Main. The changing color of the leaves is gorgeous.
