Subscribe to a photography magazine and all you get is repeats of a year ago . No real thinking behind them just keep churning out the same old articals in many cases using the same old photos, add 60% adverts and a load of biased reviews why waste your money. In so many cases they gloss over short falls with comments like distortion and chromatic aberrations can be removed in post processing then mark the item very high quality, all to keep on good terms with the advertisers

I would agree they are not necessary, but I enjoy reading something in my hands as a change of pace from reading from my screen. Best of luck.

I was a long-time Popular Photography subscriber. I love print magazines for the "comparo" articles, lessons, contest winners, yes even the ads. It's fun to drool over the cameras and lenses without bleeping Amazon or bleeping Google tracking (spying) on what I'm looking at. I didn't have to worry about whether my mag had enough charge to read the article, and didn't have to try to read a dimmed screen if I read outside. Also I didn't have to unlock it. If it had spectacular photos, I could even leave it on the coffee table.
I miss magazines. I do have a 2-in-1 with Kindle on it but it sucks by comparison. Guess I'm just another Baby Boomer Ol Geezer.🙁

I grew up reading photo mags. By age 12, I subscribed to Modern, Popular, and Petersen's. Professionally, I had 21 photo industry subscriptions in 1995. NONE now, thankfully. The Internet is much easier to use!

It is not the same. Reading in bed on a pile of pillows before turning out the light is one of the things I have always enjoyed. The photo mags were just right for that - articles and advertisements. Something about paper and print that a laptop or tablet is just not doing!

My Popular Photography subscription magically turned into a Popular Science subscription, and to tell you the truth, I'm enjoying it quite a bit.

Yes, I do miss some things about paper, but: 1) no more full recycle bins (or stacks of magazines that wife complained about-at one time I subscribed to 14 monthly and quarterly magazines) 2) I can carry several hundred editions of many magazines in one hand and 3) my Nook HD+* is its own night light for reading in the dark.
*I pre-ordered mine in early Oct 2012 and received it a few days after release in Nov 2012. A Senior Citizen in electronic terms. My Nook simple touch is a couple years older and can be read outdoors in daylight, just smaller screen and no pretty pictures since it is B&W only using adobe e-ink technology.

Yeah, but the first time you drop your Nook in the bathtub, you'll see that the incremental replacement cost is a lot higher than if you drop a copy of Architectural Digest.

Despite all the technology (PCs, tablets, laptops, etc) I still prefer the hard copy...it's nice to sit in a comfy chair with a glass of medicine and read a magazine. I can also hand it on or lend it to friends...what has killed it for me is the bull***t prices they charge these days...about the only one I buy, if I buy one at all, is the Australian magazine, Camera. Still only $8.95...some have priced themselves out of existence with prices well over the $20-30 mark.
