Can you take one or more magazines everywhere you can take a cell phone or iPad?

But I do not 'have to pay' to read them.

If you go to prime reading, it's free. I just tried it. You need kindle or the ap.

Jerry was so anxious to get the free magazine he didn't have time to read my entire original post.

For the most part, magazines and newspapers have always been mostly ads. That's what kept them in business. And the decline in print readership and thus print advertising is what's putting them out of business.

The photography mags are mostly ads, anyway.

And the few articles they have, seem to imply that the only equipment worth owning, is a minimum $1,500 lens and $2,500 body.

Photographic magazines were pretty much a marketing tool for Photographic gear vendors... Editors were extremely sensitive to the needs/desires of their advertising revenue stream... These rags were not really focused on the realities of commercial photography instead their target audience were hobbyist with disposable income. Thus as the bottom in photographic equipment fell out (just a quick glance at DSLR sales volumes over the past decade reveals) their advertisers pulled back for want of sales revenue... Please keep in mind these rags' balance sheets were supported by their advertisers NOT by subscription and point-of-sale revenues...

That said there are indeed considerably successful magazines that are the gold standard for commercial photographic excellence. The two I have subscriptions to are VOGUE and Architectural Digest in as much of my revenue stream is in these genres. The level of excellence in both the aforementioned publications is several orders of magnitude beyond what use to grace the pages of those "Photographic" hobbyist publications... Both VOGUE and Architectural Digest continue to be the gold standard in "Print" for their respective genres. Having a tear sheet i.e. being published in same is to be cherished... enough said.

Best advice? Find the leading publication(s) in genres you wish to work in and focus on the visual statement(s) of the aforementioned editor(s). They are also a likely an excellent cross-section & source of commercial advertising clients albeit so much of my work is now through advertising agencies therefore it might be wise to follow the revenue upstream to determine which advertising agencies the major players use... That is if you choose to pursue high end recompense for your work...

Hope this helps or is at least food for thought...
I wish everyone well on their journey...

Took the two main photography magazines a while back but they were almost all ads. Definitely not worth the price or time to skim through them, hoping to find something helpful. If I need specific information, I come here or do an internet search.

There is so much info in the Internet that printed photographic magazines are no longer needed.
Blame it all on technology.

I agree and many of the original print magazines have converted to digital only formats. Some have gone but that isn't always because of photography. Some were small divisions of larger publishing companies that didn't perform so the entire company (even a barely successful photo division) went under. Now, you are either on the internet or non-existent. Even the major (and minor) newspapers are digital only papers. Here in Clearwater, Florida, the only paper (delivered weekly) newspaper is primarily advertising with a little bit of current events (whos appearing on stage at Ruth Echard Hall, the McHaffey in Saint Petersburg, or the local Jazz Festival or other civic/entertainment events. Since it is a weekly there is very little hard news as people have already gotten that off of their televisions or the internet.

The articles in the 'for the masses' photo magazines became somewhat repetitive. February was entry level cameras and shooting winter scenes, June was mid-level equipment, etc.

But I doubt I was the only one who looked forward to seeing what new toys Pentax, Nikon, Yashica were going to offer us. With the internet by the time the magazines went to press everything was old news.

Just like Sears failed to transition their catalog business into an online entity, so did the popular magazines fail. No forward thinking as the world changed around them. Too bad.

I, also, lament the demise of photography magazines. I know that "time marches on", but through my first 30 years after buying my first camera, I probably learned 75% of what I know about the craft of photography from the pages of Outdoor Photographer magazine. I bought their first issue in a book store and subscribed from that point on until well into this century. Fro that, to them I say "Thank-you."
