Yes! And when the tiniest piece of sun reappeared, it was as though someone flipped on a light switch.
We also stayed home and watched the whole eclipse in our chair side seat on a large TV
took me about 3 1/2 hours to drive to Land Between the Lakes west of Hopkinsville, Ky. Took about 9 hours to get back to Louisville via the Western Ky. Parkway, and it was worth every minute I spent sitting on the highway. Everyone should see a total eclipse at least once in their life. Can't wait for the 2024 eclipse; the drive won't be nearly as far.
I'll bet those who chanced it are grateful the skies were clear that day no matter the other hassles.

Well, we and our guests chanced it, the location wasn't the best, but they did get to see the eclipse from the road as they went back to LA!

We drove from Denver up to Fort Laramie, Wyoming in 4-1/2 hours. Took 9 hours to get home. Next time will stay at observing site an extra day, couldn't this time, one in our party had to be at work Tuesday. No regrets, experiencing totality was spectacular. Now waiting on Chile in 2019 and planning to be in Cleveland for the 2014 total eclipse.

Totally agree with you and Photoartist. It took me 9 hours on back roads to go 160 ish miles back to the hotel and I would do it again in a heartbeat.
1,100 mile round trip, more money than I should have spent and worth all of it by far!
Living in GA close to the SC line, we looked for a rural spot in the center of totality. Great maps on the Internet and there were 3 other couples. No traffic, stay rural.
Here's the thing with me. It wasn't that spectacular based on all the buildup but, watching it on TV is Not the same experience as being there. That's the only thing I know for sure, totality was an experience that you had to experience totally by being there.

I would agree about being there, even in a partial eclipse. My San Francisco experience was cloud covered, but my 1999 UK eclipse was a very memorable experience. Great view from the Mendips out to Glastonbury Tor. Even avoided blinding myself.
Live in Appleton, WI. 7-8 months ago decided to make reservations to stay in Nashville. They wanted $500.00 a night. Are they upitie? We decided to go west to hope for potentially less cloud cover. Lincoln, NE, north of Beatrice, had rooms for $175.00 per night. That is where we went. Stayed 4 nights, there were clouds, but did get the full effect and got some reasonably good pictures. Drive time to and from was nine hours. Oh, I retired on December 31, 2016. Makes life easy. W9OD Oh, retire as soon as you can.

2 days from Douglas WY to near Albuquerque. Had to get a room. I-25 was a giant conga line.
Were you that guy Who was tailgating me? We were in Glenrock on a private ranch and the trip from there to Douglas wasn't bad. However, Douglas to Cheyenne took 6 hours! Fortunately we spent the next two nights at my sister's house in Cheyenne. Left at 5:30AM this morning (Wednesday 23rd) and Drove back to Albuquerque. I-25 was only bad through Denver, but once we got to Arapaho it was smooth sailing the rest of the way.
