I really like the Fort Barrancas shots, the others not so much, but that's just me. Most of us have a modicum of artistic vision and that's what really matters when creating photos that other people might like. Otherwise, if they're just for personal enjoyment, then anything goes.

You seem to have a good eye along with the maturity to understand that you learn to take good pictures by taking a lot of pictures and asking for help. I'm glad you reached out like this. I agree with the other comments that the first shot is underexposed, but probably fixable in Photoshop. I found the sunsets a bit yellow. Again probably fixable. Have taken any classes in Photoshop?

Wonderful start. I would encourage you NOT to do what everybody else is doing, but to find your own voice.

Thank you for your service. My comments are those of an amateur, so be forewarned. I like the first shot; the blurred grass and its placement below the horizontal bar works for me. I would like the brick to be lighter. Flash would have worked here. It would have lit up the brick, but not affected the outdoors. Still, a nice shot as is.

I think the composition is great... I REALLY like the second to last one. Lines, coloring are really interesting. Do what YOU like, that's what is important.

Everyone will have their own opinions, but for what it is worth, my opinion is that, for a beginner, you are doing exceptionally well. Your horizon lines are straight, your focus is very good.
Now, the subject matter is subjective...it is what you saw when you first saw it. And, you shot for what you perceived the picture should look like.
In my opinion, continue as you are doing. Other than technical changes, your work is really good.

I really like the last one. The lines are so interesting and the lighting is really nice. It does seem to have a lot of grain at the edges of the frame. That could be simply how your lens works.

I feel like I want to like the next-to-last, but I don't. I like the idea of it. It's very grainy and I don't see an actual point that's truly in focus. Do you happen to recall where you focused for this image?

I'm still semi-new to photography, but getting better all the time (I think). I'm a disabled Marine enjoying something that I've always wanted to do and now find myself with the time especially since my kids are grown. I am just in need of unfiltered, objective critiques. If you like them, let me know. If you don't, let me know. If something is technically not sound, let me know. I would surely appreciate.

First let me say thank you very much for your service.
I think all of the photos are very good. I also think they bring back special memories to you about something. The first one creates a feeling the others not quite as much but they are all good.

I like the last two the best. Well done. The landscapes are OK, but the third one doesn't pop. My main criticism for you is with your first picture. You used the brick opening as a frame, but the subject matter within the frame is way out of focus and the bricks are too dark. I suggest trying this shot a few different ways. I'd have set up on a tripod and gone to a much smaller aperture, like an f/16 or f/22 to increase the depth of field and sharpen the area beyond the window. You would have to slow down your shutter (thus the need for the tripod), but the bricks would still be exposed the same and focused on. Then I would have gone to manual focus and focused on the area beyond the bricks, using the same exposure. The bricks would then be out of focus, but you are just experimenting to see which method brings you the results you like the best. Another idea is to use fill flash to better illuminate the bricks. HDR might also be a way to go with that scene. The point is that taking multiple images using different exposures and focus points will eventually give you an image that you like more than the others. It's a good learning tool.

The focus on the next to last is lost. You'll have to ask someone other than me how to achieve crispness in that kind of image. From one vet to the other, "Thanks for your service". Gary

Good photos. I like Lake Providence with the PP because the one before has way too much sky. Always think about what is your subject. The shot of the corridor is good with the door at the end leading the viewer down the line. It's rather interesting. Anyway well done and thanks for showing. /George

Mike: You are definitely on the right track. You have a good eye for what's interesting to you. Keep on shooting lots of different scenes, objects, buildings, etc.

Thanks for serving, from an ex GI.
