Hi!

I'm still semi-new to photography, but getting better all the time (I think). I'm a disabled Marine enjoying something that I've always wanted to do and now find myself with the time especially since my kids are grown. I am just in need of unfiltered, objective critiques. If you like them, let me know. If you don't, let me know. If something is technically not sound, let me know. I would surely appreciate.

Thank you and Semper Fi,

Mike Gentry

The first four are cliches, more or less ho hum.. The forth image is very close to useful. That last image is really interestimg!

The big problem is that the above is my opinion and the next 100 viewers will see it differently. What you will need to understand is that we are all, every single one of us, precisely correct!

Only one opinion counts: yours. What do you think of them?

Unbiased comments: I think the first is too underexposed. But with some PP, you could make it pop! The sunsets are nice, but not special; the third sunset is the best of the three. I like the last two -- I'm big into shapes and lines, so they resonate with me. Nice work. Welcome to UHH and thank you for your service!

They are all good. There are very much what you see in amateur photos today.
After you have done a shot like this. Which looks like you are anticipating the audience
recompose with a different frame that is a challenge. Turn the camera around and shoot something
that the sunset hits and changes the game. Enjoy your life you earned it. Enjoy photography
and videography which is a life long passion for many of us. Good luck.

I am not a fan of sunsets in general, but the first two are very fine. Pictures with a lot of dark in them need to be seen as prints on paper--on the screen, they suffer. I like to see some deep, rich black in a print (if it is full scale that way). The brickwork passageways are excellent. I would shoot them at a smaller aperture if possible (don't worry about diffraction here), using a tripod (which you probably used anyway). You have an eye for the large format image, which is probably outside the discussion.

Good For you for asking for honest evaluations, and good for members of the list for providing them. I agree with the comments that the sunsets would benefit from more pop. You do very well with lines, shapes, and framing; and I think as you develop your personal sense of art you will find ways to express yourself truly uniquely.

I think sunsets are tough subjects because they are very often quite spectacular but, as they say, familiarity breeds contempt. We lived in So AZ for several years and, at first, I shot many sunsets but gave up because the next day would often be even better.

If you crop #5 with nothing showing above or below the blue wall it gives an interesting look

The first one confused me. Looking for the idea behind the shot. Of the sunsets I like the first and third one particularly the third. Nothing wrong with the second one, just seemed to lack point. The last two show that you have a flair for composition. The last one was my favorite. Don't be afraid to shoot clichées for awhile. They are useful for acquiring technique. Enjoy!

There is a reason some things become clichés, yes?

Thank y'all for the replies and critiques. As I venture further into this, I find myself wanting more (I'm sure y'all understand that). I will take these critiques and run with them. Thank y'all again.

I see nothing wrong with those images although I admit I do not like the one before last. Something seems to be wrong but I cannot figure it out. It is very possible that others will disagree with my opinion.
