Now, if you want to talk about an evil empire, let's talk about Comcast Cable!
HEY! I live in Philadelphia where Comcast has a HUGE presence. They have their headquarters here! They have built buildings and installed...
...STUFF.
I don't think they would ever do anything underhanded....
Unless they wanted to.
Or thought they could get away with it.
Or thought it would irritate a customer 'cause that's just fun!
Ok.
They might be evil.
I'm confused explain why they are evil?

So, Affinity is so good that you just could not wait to get off Adobe? It never ceases to amaze me how irrational people get on UHH over the Adobe CC plan and the idea forking out the cost of lunch at McDonalds each month for world class software that outperforms everything else in the market.
With Adobe your "cost of lunch at McDonalds" turns into $600 after 5 years and you still keep paying and paying and paying and paying...... And that $600 is only if Adobe doesn't raise the price somewhere down the line, if they do it will be more.
That's how they sell cars. "You can drive this baby off the lot for only $xxx.xx a month." They don't want you thinking about the total cost of the note.

I lived in the Philadelphia area for about 30 years. I go with Comcast being evil.
Their customer service policy is "SCREW YOU."

What is evil about doing exactly what they say? I understand you want your money back, but that makes a company evil? Evil is like Uber who treat their employees bad or push others down just to push them down.
Adobe is actually the opposite of evil if you look a their culture and how they both treat their employees and the community.
That may be so, BUT their vaulted Customer Service is one of the poorest I've ever come across if you are using anything but their latest programs!

So Mac, what software do you use for post processing or do you just head straight for Walgreen's after a shoot?

I guess what people miss is that when they buy a software product they are buying that version, as long as that version is what you need and you never are interested in the next version then be happy with a one time payment for your license to use the software, if you like upgrades at no additional cost, always having the latest bell and whistle, then the 9.99 a month plan is great.
When version 12 of Adobe Elements was upgraded to version 13 - was that a free upgrade? Version 13 to 14 No cost? Lightroom stand alone 3 to 4 - also no cost?
Adobe CC works fine for me at 9.99 a month for Photoshop, Lightroom and Bridge all current and updated/upgraded at no additional monthly cost for as long as I wish to keep my subscription. Not sure I would ever settle for old software that may or may not continue to work on my computer and with my current camera equipment.

"...any outstanding fees" sounds like something you owe them - something you should have paid, but didn't. It doesn't say you have to pay 50% of the rest of the year.
https://www.adobe.com/legal/terms.htmlHere is the correct quote Jerry, yes it does say 50%
"Annual contract, paid monthly
Service begins as soon as your initial payment is processed. You’ll be charged the rate stated at the time of purchase, plus applicable taxes (such as value added tax when the stated rate doesn’t include VAT), every month for the duration of your annual contract. If the applicable VAT rate (or other included tax or duty) changes during your one-year term, the tax-inclusive price will adjust accordingly. Your contract will renew automatically, on your annual renewal date, until you cancel. Renewal rates are subject to change, but we’ll always notify you beforehand. If you cancel within 14 days of your order, you’ll be fully refunded. Should you cancel after 14 days, you’ll be charged 50% of your remaining contract obligation and your service will continue until the end of that month’s billing period. Cancellations can be made any time by visiting your Manage Account page or by contacting Customer Support in your region."

Okay, but I could not find that without your link. It is not on the General Terms of Use page. I found no way to get to the page you quoted from the "Adobe General Terms of Use" page I got to when I clicked on "Terms..." on the Buying page.
When I click on Buy, I can then click on the Terms of Use link. That takes me to the page that does not tell me I have to pay 50% of the balance.

So, after five years, and $600, it's still cheaper than PS cost when I bought and paid $700 for it. Just saying.

Gotcha, I just did a Google search on "Adobe CC Cancelation" and the subscription terms was like the 3rd or fourth item on the first page of results.

AND that is for Photoshop alone right? with CC you get it AND Lightroom as one package for the same money !

And the subscription is only half what the updates for LR/PS used to cost.

Exactly what I was thinking? I'm getting constant upgrades over That 5 years, for what I paid (honestly, every 2 years)
Hmmmm Now everyone can afford the program that several of us that actually used it to make money had a hard time affording. Seems to me, the subscription plan is the opposite of "evil." They brought it to the masses, made money (not evil, it's the reason all businesses are in business), and haven't done the "just wait until they "hook you" and jack the prices up, that all the anti-Adobe people have been spouting for YEARS.
If you want to change to a different PP program, it's no skin off my nose, but why do people have to keep bashing a company? Are you trying to convince yourself? What good does it do you to try to convince everyone else who is happy?

There is no need to be snarky.
I use both Affinity and Luminar, mostly Luminar.
