How do you use Instagram?

The company I rented my photo equipment from last week told me about a contest they had for the best pic taken with their equipment. They said the contest was only on Instagram. The camera I rented - the next generation of my current model - had a feature I never tried (a lot of them, actually). On one of the menus it had the option to send a pic to a phone, among other places. From Sony, the body sans lens is $1,200. Beyond my financial ability to purchase...the lens was $1k more by itself! See my Oshkosh pics. The quality of the ones I didn't screw up on is fantastic!

Planepics - you'd be justified in selecting 1 or a few pics from Oshkosh and going through the effort to post to Instagram and tag for consideration in the rental firm's contest. PM me directly if you'd like help.

I'm grappling with the same issue. I detest Facebook because it is so poorly developed and, for me, impossible to navigate. I even get my grad daughter to laugh when I say it is "Value Priced." I'm interested is sharing my work, but, as you can see, I haven't even shared here, where the folks, save a few, are friendly. So, aside from my crusty old man instincts, please help me understand WHY????????????????????????????????????

Considering that it took me until 2014 or 15 to get a DSLR, maybe you can skew your thoughts. I do have an Iphone SE which has a good camera and apps that make it behave. I'm considering a project. Maybe I'll start there.

IG is like FB, but content is all images. I'd say "photography", but there's people doing text / memes that I wouldn't consider photography. I have a completely different network of IG "followers" that is distinct from FB "friends". I only follow photographers, preferably "serious" based on the quality of their work. Does it have any value, not that I've found other than having a more popular avenue for showing my working than Flickr & 500px.
The #-tags also help you find / join "communities" of people doing / following / creating the same things. Like anything on the internet, there's some group of people doing or interested in the same.

I save images for Instagram to a folder in Google Drive or Dropbox. From there I download them to my phone a post. I like that as I can see what the colors look like on my phone. I can also easily text the images to people that way.

You do realize of course, that online forums are a type of social media?
I don't do "social media" either and have been called out about my participation on forums by my kids.

From Lightroom on my computer I move the photos to Dropbox and then into Instagram. It has worked very well.

Get a free account at Dropbox. You can copy to dropbox and then let anyone you want to access a file or folder of files.
