I wanted to share a pic with the company that I rented a lens/camera from but when I signed up on my laptop I got the feeling that you can only post from your phone (I don't know haw to post, for that matter)

I don't know Instagram but have you considered just emailing them the pic?

Get the Instagram app for your phone. Copy or mail the pic to your phone. Upload with Instagram app.

Instagram defaults to square format, but they have recently added an ability to upload non-square images. However, in my experience they still crop the image.

You might see if the company has a facebook page; that's a better way to share in my opinion.

I was surprised myself that you can only post files to Instagram from the phone app. You can browse from a computer. The comment about using 1x1 is spot-on. If you use another format, portrait is better than landscape that just makes the picture smaller when displayed. But just to send a picture to someone doesn't require Instagram ...

Yeah! Like who uses their phone to take pictures?! You're as far removed from 20-somethings as I am. Some people use Instagram as a way of life. I've never used it. I don't see the difference between Instagramming and emailing - or Facebooking.

I haven't been 20-something for 20-something years. I saw lots of white and gray lenses (as well as lots of phones). One guy I met was a photojournalist from South Africa. He had what looked like a 500 f/4 (?) plus a roll-behind of other equipment. One day I decided to mosey up onto the Nikon stand to see what the view was - it thinned out massively once the Blue Angels demo was over. Amazing the difference about 15' of altitude can make! I only took a handful of pics at the night airshow on Saturday.

You can also view your Instagram account on your Laptop or Desktop, you can also send existing images to other friends or Family. Although you will need to have a camera on your Laptop or Desktop to take photos. Any photos taken by your smartphone should appear on your Instagram account on your Desktop or Laptop.

Actually, you can transfer images from your DSLR camera to your phone for posting. All my work, see link below, is from my 5DIII, cropped to 1x1 in LR and then sent to my phone and posted. I've only been in IG since Dec '16 so I'm not sure how the site worked in the past.

I have no desire to start a boxing match.
When, as one who partakes of no form of 'social' media, I read the title the first thought that went through my mind was,

"Why do you use Instagram?"
