My suggestion is that you don't buy anything until you hold one of that model in your hands and use the controls. Think about WHY you're buying the camera? You said Grandkids, well, you may want to consider a nice pocketable point and shoot if there are really young ones to deal with. Definitely want stills and a movie capability. Think about weight. My DSLR camera bag weighs 35 pounds or so with just the stuff I consider "essentials". I'm 6' and go about 250lbs but that bag gets heavy after an hour or so.
Welcome to the Hog Vic, enjoy.
When you ask a question like which is better, Canon or Nikon you are going to get lots of different opinions. If you can, as others suggested, go to a camera store, or Best Buy, Costco and check out different models. See which feels better to you and which controls, dials, menu system is more to your liking. If you can't afford a brand new camera, a factory refurbed camera or one from a reputable dealer like KEH, B&H, Adorama may be the way to go if you are on a tight budget.
Welcome to UHH.
Welcome to UHH Redheadvic, glad you joined us. Canon or Nikon, Ford or Chevy, endless choices. I shoot Nikon and have since 1975 so I tend to lean in that direction. Go to a camera store and handle both brands and different models. Which one feels comfortable in your hands. Remember, I am not shooting with your camera, you are. Don't forget to give a refurbished model a look, will save you some $$$.
Have fun, learn and enjoy the forum.

Lots of good ideas! Thank you. I will be checking them out at Costco. I have time before we go to Disney and my grandkids are older (as am I, LOL) so I want something more complicated than a point and shoot. The first digital I bought was simple and smaller than what I am looking for now. It took nice pictures of Hawaii, but I want a better camera than that one. I still use it, but it just is not enough. My Ricoh took great pictures, but I am not messing with film anymore, although I will keep that camera anyway.
Thanks again for all the good advice. I am going to go through the links and definitely going to a local camera shop and also Costco and Best Buy. Then I will have a great idea what I want.
Was your Ricoh a "K" mount ? look at Ricoh / Pentax. All Pentax "K" mount lenses will work on the New Pentax cameras. Could save you big bucks and give you a nice set up. I just upgraded from Pentax K10 D to the new Pentax K-S2. Love the 20mp and video. Still learning about this camera.
I have a friend that was from the Fostoria area and we have gone to see the presidential house there too. We are maybe a couple hours away from there.
Welcome! Looking forward to your posts and pictures. Happy shooting!
14kphotog - I have extra lens for my Ricoh, but when I looked up the K-mount, mine are not like those. My Ricoh is old, maybe 30 or even 35 years old. It has served me well and still works fine, but just is not as convenient as some of the newer cameras. I sure do wish my lens would fit another because I would look into one just for that reason, but I will be starting from scratch no matter what I get.
I have gotten lots of good ideas about holding the cameras etc. I guess I never really thought about doing that, although I generally do hold cameras when looking at them. Now I will certainly be sure that I do. Excellent ideas on what to do when looking around. I will be sure to check out more in the stores than I thought I might. Of course, I would have checked at Costco because I go there so often, and I have already. Now I know I will be looking a bit closer in certain areas. Not sure where I will buy, but whatever I do end up with I will see that in the event I should want to get yet another camera that the lens would fit a possible new camera. Thanks everyone.
Try Campus Camera in Kent or Dodd's also The Canon store Refurbished. Good Luck!
Hi,
I too am new to the Hog, and I too have been looking at the T7i. I also think the Nikon models are excellent choices and if I didn't already have Canon lenses and flashes, I would buy Nikon. But, to be able to use what I have, I'm looking at the T7i and the T6i.
I'm just now hearing about refurbished, so I'm going to check that out as well.
