Hi from Ohio
I am new and have just registered. My reason for joining is that I want to know whether Canon or Nikon. I was able to do quite well with cameras until all this digital equipment came out and I need to learn fast! I am so unorganized with my pictures, but first I want to start practicing for a Disney trip this December with the grandkids and I want good pictures. I am looking to spend $500+ on a new camera and first looked at the Canon EOS rebel T6, but see there are other models in that line for up to over $1000. Then I checked out the Nikon. Please help me decide why I would want one over the other or if there is some other camera for an amateur other than the ones I have been looking at. I have been told it is mostly up to each person's opinion, but why and what is the reasons one is chosen over another.
Thank you and howdy from NW Ohio!

I would suggest looking into buying a used Canon T6i from KEH. Or you can buy directly from Canon (referbished).
You can save a lot of money.
Both Canon & Nikon make very good cameras. People usually buy a camera brand because that's what they started with
in the film days. Also look into Olympus, their quality is the best. However you will not have the selection of lenses that you'd
have with canon or Nikon.

Thank you Al. I was looking at that model on Amazon. I love to 'window shop' on Amazon. I learn a lot about a product without having to run all over.
I like Nikon because I like the layout of the controls and buttons better than Canon. To me, the buttons on Canon cameras are kind of helter skelter, located all over the place. I never liked how the shutter button on Canon cameras is in a groove that forces the index finger to be in that groove. That's just me. Many people will have a different take on that. A good way to figure it out is to rent. I've rented from LensRental.com from time to time. They're very good. They clean every item when it's comes back from being rented. They include a pre-paid return shipping label in the box to make returns easy.
Go to Best Buy or a camera shop. Check out the Canon and Nikon there. They have a few models with both manufacturers. While you are at it, look at the Sony A6000 and A6300. Nikon, Canon and Sony offer great cameras.
I own a Nikon D500 and Sony a6000. Friend bought a Nikon D5300 last March for less then $500 on Amazon. He loves it.
Yes, both good.
Get he one that feels most comfortable for you to use.
Take CO's nit picking of the Canon function lay out with a grain of salt I could find lot's wrong and out of place with Nikon.
It's his opinion. (Opinions are like ass holes, every one has one).
The Canon T6i is a fantastic camera, has features you most likely never use.

My theory is a box is a box is a box. It's all about the glass you put on it. Play with them all and see which feels comfortable. Control location is huge and you may like one better that the other. I actually compare cameras to hand guns. What feels great and comfortable in my hand, may not in yours. It needs to feel right.
Thanks everyone. I had a good Ricoh camera that uses film, but I need something that will last me for what I do. I can take really good pictures, but I like decent equipment. I had some of my travel pix published in a book with only amateur several years ago. So I was pleasantly surprised. I just do this for fun mostly. I am going to browse this site and learn about the digital world. I am so untechy that keeping my pictures in order in the digital world is just not good. I trusted myself to keep things in order. All my film pictures are in albums, in order with dates on them. I am learning a whole new set of rules now. Thanks for the help!
One more question... I see on Amazon that there is a T7i I believe it was. Would that just be a newer version of the T6i?
Welcome to the forum from Western New York State. Go to a camera store if you have one near you, Best Buy if you don't, and hold lots of camera. See what feels comfortable to you and has features you want/need. I had Nikon and ultimately switched to Fujifilm. Fuji, Canon, Nikon, Sony, Olympus and others all make fine cameras. Go with what feels good.
