I remember not long ago a group of professional photographers shot pictures with disposable cameras and the photos came out very good.
Just yesterday (or maybe the day before) I read an article about a photographer who shot his entire portfolio using just an 85mm prime lens.

It's the photographer, not the equipment. The equipment is just a tool and can make thing easier. But if you're a good photographer, you'll get good photographs with any equipment. And if you're not a very good photographer, you may have the best equipment there is and it won't improve your photography.

This and similar posts are supported by the great quality images that can be captured with current model cell phones. My iPhone SE had provided me with some excellent images, and the M645 app adds some of the creative controls found on a fully adjustable camera.

I bought a great used D200 for my wife and when we compare her D200 shots beside my D800 shots there is no comparison as to which one has the better color...............the D200.

Great post but you will be nailed by defenders of the faith proclaiming why they need all those specialized lenses and expensive cameras... as many respected folks on this site have said many times before " Use what you have and get out there and shoot ".

As I sit here this morning reading the Hog, you just reminded me that I planned on getting out and shooting. What am I still doing here on my computer? LOL.

Thanks for the nudge.

Asking Joe Q Public which photo they like is not a great measure in my opinion. Just look at how many terrible photos people post on Facebook and they get all kinds of likes and "Great Photo" comments. The better measure of the cameras abilities might be at the fringes of shooting conditions not in the sweet middle.

Best,

Just curious, how does the iPhone do with stopping motion of faster moving objects. That is usually where the phone cameras fail in my small experience.

I watched a Matt Grainger video where he took two identical images of the same model; one with a $10,000 camera and one with a $100 camera. Printed both and asked random non-photographers to choose which they liked better. The $100 camera image was chosen most often. The winner was a beat up D200 w/50mm lens. The looser was a Nikon D5 with an Otis lens.

Something to ponder...

A d200 was an awesome camera, and some of the old 50's were wonderful lenses. My old d200 gave me some of the best photos I have! This is no surprise at all!

An Zeiss Otis lens is one of Zeiss's best photographic portrait lens. Here it is https://www.amazon.com/Zeiss-Planar-Manual-Focus-Nikon/dp/B00NGEE4O0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1501262241&sr=8-1&keywords=zeiss+otus+85mm

Why would a photographer go to the trouble of shooting two pictures with two
different quality cameras and then asking NON-photographers which ones they
liked better? To "like better" a non-photographer is not able to distinguish which
one actually is better....what a waste of time!

I didn't assume that is why I answered as best I could, I own the Zeiss Milvus 85mm f1.4 (second best, also less than half the cost).

Not all surprised. The D200 is a fine camera in good light as is the 50mm lens. Am otis lens? Probably the cut off bottom of a coke bottle. Guess which determines the better photo?
