I tried my in camera noise reduction for the first time while shooting the stars for a 15 minute exposure on my D5100. I didn't know it would take another 15 minutes for it to process the noise reduction!

Thanks all. I've started working with Lightroom, so I will turn the High ISO noise reduction off. I only shoot RAW, and convert selected images to JPEG.
Great information available at UHH!. This is a resource I am so happy to have found!

So, at a rate of 6fps, you could still get 2 or 3 frames per second? Still looks like relatively rapid fire, just not the original.

Think about how a long exposure might be handicapped if you keep the shutter open for instance 30 seconds, 1 minute or 5 minutes with in camera noise reduction turned on. Conceivably it might take 10 minutes to make a single image. Post processing gives FAR more flexibility and control.
