The camera generates the wifi signal that is received by your phone -- no cellular signal is involved. You can probably get an older smartphone free from friends, or pick one up on eBay for a few bucks. You don't need to subscribe to any cellular phone service to be able to use the wifi capabilities of the phone.

I love the ease of using my 5300 with the WMU.
Again, there is no cell service needed, the camera talks to the phone via a simple setup.
I use it for family group photos, photos with grand kids.
My biggest problem is trying to look natural and not like a deer caught in the headlights in the photos.

I have nikon infra remote Tha do a good job. In addition I recently bought a Solmeta gps receiver for my d7200 and it came with a wired remote. Both work very well especially the gps.

The Nikon ML-L3 sells for $18 through Adorama, though I have seen it at various prices elsewhere from $5 to $25.

Lots of Nikon knockoff-lookalikes around for about 5.00 bucks. Many people say they work. I have the original Nikon Ml-L3 that I bought for around 15.00 bucks, years ago. It works very well and the coin battery lasts for a long time and is inexpensive.

wireless or wired? I am starting to look for a remote trigger for my Nikon D5300. Should I get a wireless or wired one? A few of the reviews state that for a wireless one you have to be in front of the camera - I don't know if I like that idea or not. Especially for landscape photo's - I might not be able to get in front of the camera.

this is my first dslr and got it last November, so just starting to get together all the various pieces!

Looking for recommendations please?

Happy 4th of July to everyone!

You can get the infrared wireless for about $5. The D5300 has sensors front and rear. One of the better features of that camera!

I keep mine on the camera strap with the little holder that came with it.

The D5300 also has WIFI but the infrared is much simpler to use.

Thanks for the additional explanation....but to use wifi connection from camera to phone...wouldn't I need to have wifi service available to the phone? That's the reason I don't have a smartphone yet...even at my house...I have no cell service available yet. Still have to have the hard line phone...lol Mountains around my area are the issue ...no cell towers close.

The WIFI goes directly from the camera to the phone. You do have to link them up but don't need anything else...other than the free Nikon App.

I too live where there is no cell service. They recently improved the DSL in my area so the cell phone works fine in the house over WIFI. I have about 20 mi of no service when driving to town. I keep a land line too because we sometimes lose power so I lose the WIFI.

I use the Cello Shuttrbose most, but also have the IR remote! The IR you need to be close and pointed in the right direction other doesn't work! The Vello works no matter where you point it!

Spider223,
What is the name of the Wireless Mobile Utility you use on your iPhone? Did you find it on the Apple App Store or elsewhere?
Thanks,

I have a D5300 and have used the app. It is WMU (wireless mobility utility) and on play store, also on applestore I believe. It allows wireless transfer of photos to another device, remote triggering and remote viewing. I find the remote viewing to be very unreliable. I want to mount the camera on a tripod near the bird feeder, watch the remote viewfinder and take pics of the birds. It is a matter of luck to get the setup working. Anyone else have any advice about using this? Previous responses are correct, you do not need cell service to use this app, just a phone with wifi capability. I have considered using a remote trigger as the WMU is a pain.

Thanks, Jerry. Want to try on my 5100. Have a cheap wireless one now which goes thru batteries quickly. And I wanted a backup. Tried a wired one and it was really hit and miss so I returned it. Going to try this before spending more and trying another wired/wireless version.

You can get a ML-L3 knockoff at Ebay for $1. I bought a couple, works fine. This is practically free so I would recommend you try it.

I use a Vello Freewave which is wireless on my D7100. It has a range of approximately 100 meters (320 feet) in any direction from the camera and will work with both stills and video. Other that losing the trigger portion, I've had excellent service from the device. I paid about $35 for it and highly recommend it.

I have used IR, RF and wired quite a bit. I do a lot of long exposures at night. I only used wired now for the additional long exposure programming options and the reliability factor. I use a Polaroid Shutter Release Timer Remote Control I got from Amazon for 25 bucks.
