wireless or wired? I am starting to look for a remote trigger for my Nikon D5300. Should I get a wireless or wired one? A few of the reviews state that for a wireless one you have to be in front of the camera - I don't know if I like that idea or not. Especially for landscape photo's - I might not be able to get in front of the camera.
this is my first dslr and got it last November, so just starting to get together all the various pieces!
Looking for recommendations please?
Happy 4th of July to everyone!

Wired is best for dependability, but distance limited. Cheapest choice.
IR wireless is OK but short distance in daylight and the batteries always fail at inopportune times. Canons IR must be used in front of the camera, Nikon's have a rear receptor on them as well as a front receptor.
Radio wireless remotes are by far the best due to long range ability, up to 100 yards. Yes they need batteries, but at least it's not those ridiculous coin batteries. They are also the most expensive option.
Radio controlled is best. Long reach, obstacles no problem. Yongnuo makes trigger and receiver unit combos for under $100. They're also TTL compatible. Instructions are poor but lots of easy YouTube videos to show you how to use them.
I have the D5500 and use the wireless remote or the Wireless Mobile Utility on my iPhone. The D5500 has an IR receiver on both the front and rear of the camera, as does the D5300.
The Nikon ML-L3 sells for $18 through Adorama, though I have seen it at various prices elsewhere from $5 to $25.
Thanks everyone for comments and suggestions....I didn't realize the d5300 has a rear as well as front sensor. I don't have a smartphone so an app won't do me any good...even if I did...90% of the places we go have no cell service anyway. I have a $60 gift card for B&H...so might as well use it for one.
I have the ML-L3 Nikon IR remote trigger for my D7200, which has both front and rear IR sensors. Works well, and a bargain. Got mine from Best Buy for $18.00.

To use the app you do not need cell service, the camera makes its own wifi connection to your cell phone or iPad for control and transfer of photos. Not really relevant to you if you don't have a smart device.
The ML-L3 works fine for me, though make sure you set its 'Remote on duration' in your menu. It seemed like my D5500 defaulted to 1 minute. Once you set that portion, you don't need to change it again. I've set mine for 15 minutes.
On my D5500;
MENU - CUSTOM SETTING DENU - TIMERS/AE LOCK - REMOTE ON DURATION (ML-L3) - 15m

Thanks for the additional explanation....but to use wifi connection from camera to phone...wouldn't I need to have wifi service available to the phone? That's the reason I don't have a smartphone yet...even at my house...I have no cell service available yet. Still have to have the hard line phone...lol Mountains around my area are the issue ...no cell towers close.

The camera generates the wifi signal that is received by your phone -- no cellular signal is involved. You can probably get an older smartphone free from friends, or pick one up on eBay for a few bucks. You don't need to subscribe to any cellular phone service to be able to use the wifi capabilities of the phone.

Or a newer iPad/iPad mini or similar android device. Only downside is the wifi running in the camera really uses the battery on the camera.
Overall, I prefer the ML-L3, but the wifi option is nice to have just in case.
Get a cable release for general use- I use one all of the time.
Get a wireless remote for occasional use. I've got two versions
but rarely use them.

I have both wired and wireless, and they both work well, although the wired remotes usually offer many more features.
