Your college financing situation is very familiar to me - not sure whether to congratulate you on your daughter's accomplishments or commiserate with you (I am still paying off my son's school loans). It reminds me of an old friend who ran a small Polynesian restaurant which we frequented almost weekly. He had two children enrolled at Duke University (which has an indescribably high tuition). On the day they graduated, we ate at his restaurant, and after dinner, we were standing outside talking (he, covered in sweat from his work in the kitchen). I congratulated him on having not one, but two children graduating from Duke, and mentioned that he could now take it easier. "No", he said. "Bad news. One accepted to medical school, the other to law school".

I'm putting off upgrading from a 5D3 to a 5D4 for the same reason as you 😩.

Her pre-med at UCLA wasn't cheap either.
I am hoping I live long enough to call her Dr Daughter. Don't think I will be able to get any free care though. She wants to be a Pediatric Reconstructive/Orthopedic surgeon.

The 5 axis IS is software, not mechanical and is for video only.

Not according to the people at B&H. It works on both videos and stills.

Could someone comment on why the 6d II only has a sync speed of 180, my 70D had a sync speed of 200.

Yes that's what I read. For what's it's worth the the original 6D had the 1/180 second limitation as well.

If you think 45 focus points is too much, why then would you prefer/chose a 5D M III, because it has quite a bit more than 45?

I never said it was too much. I said I'd rather have less focus points spread out. I have a 7D II with 65 points covering most of the screen and love it. What I meant was I'd rather have less focus points spanning across the screen rather than several in the middle of the screen tightly grouped. Canon borrowed the focus points from the 80D and put it on a full frame. They should have added more focus points on the new 6D II or spread them out beyond the middle of the screen.

The 6DII is $100 less than the 6D was when it was released. I paid $2200 for mine with the 24-105 one year after release.
There is a lot more than the AF upgrade. And it is the AF of the 80D, not the 70D. 45 cross type points and with some lenses 27 will focus at f/8. It also has built in 5-axis IS, tilt screen and a bunch of other improvements.
I have a 6D and a 7DII. I want the 6DII, maybe even replace both the others. But it will be a while since our daughter (the baby of the family at 23) just sent out applications to a pile of medical schools.

It is none of my business but I really don't understand the parent who wants to pay the freight for advanced degrees for their kids. If you are plush with money and you want to do it fine. But there are a ton of ways to get education and your kids will in theory at least make very good money once they get their advanced educations. They have their whole lives ahead of them to earn and pay off the debt that would perhaps take on to go beyond a 4 year college education. First, make sure that you have enough money to fund your own life and retirement years. Kids have 40 or more years of earning potential ahead of them. I always called medical a trade school because if you go and get throughout you most likely will operated in that trade. Similar for lawyers, but lawyers have more flexibility in what they generally can work in or jobs they can do.

Best,
Todd Ferguson

So she is looking at 4 years of medical school and a 5 year orthopedic program most likely... Of course my dad was an orthopedic surgeon and he didn't finish school until he was 37 and I was 16. He also picked up a PHD in addition to the MD and did the 5 year orthopedic program after a stint doing advanced research in the navy. Good life once he started practicing but the world changed as he grew older. And you pay a certain price for that choice...there are a number of other things you sacrifice to achieve your goals.

Best,
Todd Ferguson

I enlisted in the Army, worked 20-40 hours a week at a super market and other things. I lived with my mother and helped pay the rent etc.
My grades suffered from all that. So I vowed that if my kids wanted to go to college and on to advanced degrees I would help them as long as I could afford it and they could pay me back when they got to working. It worked with our oldest and it will probably work with Jasmine. She is going to apply to the Air Force after she gets into a medical school and get in on the "x years of active duty" to pay the Air Force back program. I have suggested she check other Gvt groups, I know they used to do the same thing if you worked on a Reservation or some remote village in Alaska. I almost signed up to teach in Alaska on that kind of program: 4-6 years in a remote village school or clinic if a Dr or Nurse, no income tax, high interest gvt savings account for your salary, tickets to go home 2 or three times a year plus room board etc while serving. But, they were looking for married couples first and they filled all the slots with married couples before they got to my name.

Perhaps I should have been more clear. I paid for my son's undergraduate education, and he paid for his own graduate degree. He held up his end of the deal - despite struggling with a learning disability, he graduated in exactly 4 years with excellent grades while also wrestling at the collegiate level. As a teacher, it will take him many years to pay the loans for it, but it was his choice to attend grad school, he's an excellent, talented teacher, and I couldn't be prouder. In this highly technical world, we are getting to the point that for many types of jobs, and advanced degree is necessary. For my part, I spent 3 years in the military (including a year in a combat zone) to get the GI bill, and then worked 30-40 hours per week to get through school, so it took me almost 9 years, and I didn't want much son to go through that, even if that path had been available to him.

There certainly are means, and needs that need filled, for anyone that wants an education to get one in this country. I tried to get my wife to go air force when we finished college and make a career out of it. But she didn't want to go that route, so I went to industry and she went to the hospital systems. Best of all to you and your family...

Best,
Todd Ferguson

All in all, I think the 6dII is well worth my considerations, but as mentioned previously, this will be a big purchase for me and even a couple hundred either way could make or break the deal. Photography is now my primary recreational activity and my skills now deserve a real upgrade in the tools I use and the 6dI was already high on my list of upgrade possibilities and the 6dII is now an even better option that I would love to have and I am considering. However, I feel the need to ask if the original 6dI will come down in price any more after the full release of the 6dII and if so what does this group feel might be the low end price before they are only available on the used market? Any feedback would be appreciated.
