I've been interested in the 6D to move up to a full frame camera for awhile now, but just couldn't pull the trigger primarily due to what I felt was a low end autofocus system. Apparently, the 6D Mark II will soon be available with the primary improvement being a much improved autofocus system similar to the 70D. However, the price is now much improved as well and it no longer seems to fit into the same price point category I was considering. Therefore, I'm still hesitant to jump onboard due to the Nikon offerings and the difference in price needed to move on up to the 5D. Therefore, I'd like to start a discussion on the new 6D Mark II and see what others here think of the upgrade and it's overall value. Being retired now, this will be a big purchase for me and I'd appreciate any and all input on this subject, thanks!

If you're thinking Canon FF, (and a 1DX2 is a bit too dear), you have 4 choices ( prices are approximate):

6D2 $2,000 (new)
5D4 $2,400 (new)
5D3 $1,500 used
6D $1,300 new, $1,000 used

Only you can decide what fits within your budget and desires.

The 6DII is $100 less than the 6D was when it was released. I paid $2200 for mine with the 24-105 one year after release.
There is a lot more than the AF upgrade. And it is the AF of the 80D, not the 70D. 45 cross type points and with some lenses 27 will focus at f/8. It also has built in 5-axis IS, tilt screen and a bunch of other improvements.
I have a 6D and a 7DII. I want the 6DII, maybe even replace both the others. But it will be a while since our daughter (the baby of the family at 23) just sent out applications to a pile of medical schools.

The 5 axis IS is software, not mechanical and is for video only.

Umm, I think the 5D4 is more like $3400 new.

Nope, not what Canon says.

Did some searching, in some places it just says 5-axis stabilization, in other it does say video. So that doesn't interest me at all, I buy DSLRs to take still pictures, I own a camcorder to do video. And that is my wife, I almost never do video.

I have a the original 6D which I bought 3 years ago. At the time, I figured I could get a 6D and a 7D Mark II for around the same price as a 5DMark III. If I had to do it all over again today, it would be different. I would get a 5D Mark III over the 6D or the 6D Mark II. A 5D Mark III is pretty comparable to a 6D Mark II in price and a better camera. The price of the 5D Mark III has come down since the 5D Mark IV came out. My complaint about the 6D is the focus points are tightly grouped in the center. The new 6D Mark II has 45 focus points and Dual Pixel Auto Focus which is great, but again they are tightly grouped in the center of the frame. I'd rather have less focus points and have them spread out. Having 45 focus points in the center of the screen doesn't work for me, maybe others but not me. That's because I don't like to focus and recompose.

You might try the Canon Refurbished Site. I purchased a 5D Mark III from them late last year. I am on social security and have budget constraints. A couple of things make me choose Canon Refurbished Cameras. One is that they give you a one year warranty, the same as for a new camera. Secondly, they take Pay Pal and let you pay for the camera over 36 months at 7.99%. You can also choose 12 or 24 months at a lower rate. Now they don't always have what you want in stock, but if they do, you can't beat the price. I hakd to keep check the site before I finally found the camera in stock. Good luck!

I just pre-ordered the 6D2 from B&H. I have been shooting with the 6D1 for the past 5 years and have liked it very much. I wavered between the 6D2 and 5D4, but after reading the final specs and a couple of preliminary reviews, I chose the 6D2. Like you, the AF was a principal driver in the desire to upgrade, along with a bit more resolution for cropping. As far as the comparison with the 5D4, some of the considerations were these:
1. The AF with 45 cross points should be adequate for my shooting. I do wish they were not all condensed toward the center of the frame, which somewhat defeats the purpose. But, ok.
2. Not often, if ever, will I be able to detect the difference between the 26 vs. 30 megapixels.
3. 6.5 fps exceeded my expectations and is only .5 less than the 5D4.
4. The 6D2 AF will function with the 1.4x extender as well as the 5D4.
5. I don't use video, so the 4K of the 5D4 was immaterial.
6. I am eager to have the articulating LCD for LiveView as I get older and less flexible. I think that was a flawed omission by Canon on the 5D4 and was a strong consideration for me.
7. I don't care about 2 card slots.
8. Low light shooting should be about the same, both for IQ and AF.
9. I am already familiar with the simpler 6D functions and it's doubtful that I will use several of the more sophisticated features of the 5D4.
10. While I don't shoot in rough weather, and thought the better sealing of the 5D4 would not be that important, I was nevertheless glad to see that Canon significantly upgraded the weatherproofing of the 6D2.

You can't go wrong with either choice, and you're going to be delighted with your new camera. The $1,000 difference in price wasn't a big consideration for me, but the savings will help me rationalize succumbing to my next GAS attack.

I bought a refurbished 6D from Canon for about $1100 last year and love it. I shoot mostly wildlife, landscape, and people.

You are correct ($3,300 at Adorama, etc). Sorry - typo.

If we, the consumers. refrain from buying this outdated camera, perhaps Canon will produce a more adequate product. At $2000, I rather get a great lens and keep on using previous gear. Before buying an outdated product, I rather keep my old gear, IMHO of course.

The 6D Mk 2 will increase the difficulty of those debating whether to buy a 5D Mk 4. I refer specifically to the $1300 higher price of the latter. The better features in the 5D Mark 4 will make but a slight difference to many who will not want to pay $1300 more for them.
