There is a huge difference between D7100 and D7200. Buffer size and ISO upper limit is 4 X as high in D7200, 25,000 versus 6400. There are more subtle things too like dynamic range handling, etc. They are close in price. Buy the best. The D7500 does not have the pixel densisty compared to the 24 megs of the D7200--and you can tell the difference when cropping.

I am thinking of upgrading from a Nikon D5100 to either a D7100 or D7200. I have read the specs for both and cannot see a big difference, am I missing something? Any thoughts, suggestions or current 7100 or 7200 owner testimonial would be greatly appreciated.

My vote is the D7200. A little better buffer and built-in wifi, if that's an interest for you. I wish I would have waited for the D7200 before purchasing the D7100; but, it's not enough of a difference to upgrade.

Of course, now they have the D7500!

I had upgraded from a D5000 & now I've upgraded to a D500.

If you don't care about BUILT-IN WiFi, I have a D7100 for sale (body only) and I'm throwing in the external WU-1a for WiFi FREE, plus a camera bag & 2 books on using the camera. Asking $695 obo

What does being a Vet have to do with answering a question about two specific cameras?
You are correct in that you don't need to apologize for leading us astray. It happens all the time around here.

I'm not sure what this has to do with anything, but there are many Vets here on UHH.

A Vet such as myself does not need to be "brow-beat" on here for answering a ?. The man was on here for an opinion....I gave it. If he does not like it....move on and forget about it. Ugly-Hedgehog means anything goes....and it all won't be pretty! Live with....or ignore it. When you see: Illininitt....don't read it. Don't cry about it. If you see the name and STILL read it....who's fault is it!?

Thank you for your service, however have you got anything positive to contribute on a forum about photography? There are other sections on this forum dedicated to chit chat, and perhaps that is what you are looking for.

The biggest difference is the newer processor in the D7200 giving you a larger and faster buffer, plus it adds WI-Fi.
And forget the Canon Rebel suggestion, you already have a better camera than that one.

MT is spot on. I have the D7100 and hope to add the D7200 to camera bag soon for all the reasons MT stated.

Just so you know.... I had two digital cameras before my Nikons. Since then I have owned D90, D300, D5100, D7000, D7100, D7200, & D500.

To give someone advice on which camera to buy, it is really better to know the person's experience, skill, & photography subject interests. Also, how you shoot; ie: Auto, Program, Shutter/Aperture priority. I had the D5100 for a trip to Alaska, shooting landscape & wildlife/nature. I hated it. Why, because it was too hard to control how I wanted to shoot, plus the weird noise that the D5100 shutter made. It caused me some problems when shooting black bears. Soon after that trip I ditched the D5100, & bought a D7000. It was pretty good. But when I got the D7100, Wow! I have gotten some of my best photos from that camera. In just a few ways, it's even better than the D7200. If you are shooting sports/wildlife the D7200 is probably a little better. With either one of these, take the time necessary to tune your camera to all the lenses that you will use.

I shoot Aperture mode. The EasyISO feature on both these cameras is great. That isn't available on the D500. If you have settled for a D5100 for a long time, I would think that the D7100 would be a great value at today's prices. Good Shooting!

I upgraded from a D5100 to a D7000. While they both can make similar quality images I found that the 7000 was comfortable for me use as I like to make lots of changes as I'm shooting, like ISO, bracketing, and selecting User saved settings. The external controls of the D7xxx series make this quicker and easier than the 5100 menu system and I quickly adapted. The ability of the 7xxx series to autofocus many older Nikkor lenses was a bonus for me.

Yesterday I ordered a refurbished D7200 from Nikon (sale). I considered the 7100 as the price was a couple hundred bucks less than the 7200. However it was an easy choice for me to pay the difference for a bunch of the technical advances mentioned here and the larger buffer. IMO the small buffer in the D7000 and 7200 was a terrible oversight. It often made me frustrated and occasionally miss a shot. I believe that I should not have to choose between having only a limited number of exposures in a sequence or saving in JPG instead of RAW.

YMMV.

Most of the time I'll keep my wide angle zoom on my 7000 and the telephoto zoom on my new 7200. With crossed shoulder straps like a bandolier I can wear one camera on each hip like an old-west gunslinger :-)

I have a D7100 and love it! The D7200's primary advantage over the D7100 is built in wifi. There is an adapter for wifi for the D7100, if shooting something immediately to Facebook, Instagram, etc. is important to you. If I'm in that situation, and I sometimes am, I'll shoot a wide shot on my phone, ship it and give them good pictures later.
