I am just venting...

I meant to purchase the Nikon D750 with 24-120mm lens kit with the free battery grip from B&H on Friday June 16. I even updated my account information and password earlier in the week to ensure that I would have no trouble when I went to complete the purchase. Unfortunately when I tried to log on around 9:00PM CST I found that purchases from the website were not available due to the company's observance of shabbat. No problem. The site stated that I could order again starting at 8:45PM EST on Saturday.

Fast forward to Saturday. I missed the sale!!!

My purchase of the kit was with the knowledge that I would then sell the battery grip to reduce the cost. Now what I thought would cost me $1700 to $1750 after selling the grip is $2300 instead and out of my grasp. B&H and Nikon both now state that they do not know of or anticipate this deal again in the near future. Even if I tried to purchase the refurbished camera and lens, which I am not totally comfortable with, it would cost me $2200.

The D750 was my sweet spot. I was not considering the D610 even though it is a great camera. I wanted to avoid purchasing the older technology for the same cost as the D750 kit. Please do not rail on me for this. I know the technology changes the minute something becomes available.

I am now dealing with the frustration of what to do. I wanted the camera now as I am getting back into photography as motivation to become more active. Any camera would do right?!

It has been 20+ years since I used my Canon EOS Elan IIe with Canon EF 30-85mm. I liked the D750 because of its feature set and its full frame sensor which is what I felt I would move to in the long run.

I like perspective photography, street photography, portraiture, nature, landscapes, wildlife, etc. I really enjoy photographing whatever catches my eye at the moment. I was hoping to get a good all around camera with a good all around lens and now I am lost again after what amounts to a couple of months worth of research.

All constructive comments and recommendations are welcome!

Sales come and go, and you have to move fast. I have a pair of D750s, and I'm perfectly satisfied with them - no desire to buy something new. Ebay doesn't seem to have much better prices. Below is a link to recent D750 sales. If you spend the money for a different model, you'll probably regret not having the D750. You could buy the camera and get a used 50mm lens on ebay for a good price. Years ago, the 50mm was the standard lens that came with every DSLR.

I think you really missed it! My guess that the next time Nikon reduce the price of the D750 is when after they introduced the replacement model.

If you don't mind buying a refurb, I just got an email from Nikon showing you can get a refurb D750 for $1399.95. A whole lot of folks here have bought and recommend refurbished cameras.

Refurbs are my first choice for lots of gear.

Jet.com is not an authorized Nikon dealer. Maybe that is not important, but I only buy photography equipment form authorized dealers.

Can I offer that Elan a good, kind, and loving home?

Did you have any other accessories? Are you sure you will never want to throw a roll of film into a camera for old times sake? I picked up an old EOS 500n recently just to have some fun with film in, partly because it is compatible with all my current Canon speedlites and EF lenses, so it's a $10 purchase. Yes, I know you can do similar with Nikon, but they make it harder AIUI.

Canon appear to have a refurbed 6D for $1100 on their US store if you really want a FF camera. This would work with your old lens, and leave you $600 to add a second lens or decent flash or whatever you want really.

You could have gotten this deal from any Nikon dealer. The sale was advertised well in advance, late May to early June AFAIK. I have no idea why you let it go if it was something you wanted so badly and couldn't afford without. You can wait and see what is offered at the next Nikon sale; they have them every 6 months. This one, however, was the biggest savings I've seen for a while.

You will just have to save more money, and be prepared to jump when the deals go rolling by.

By the way, Ritz and Walmart have the D750 with 24-120 for around $2000; not too far off from your target and you won't have to hassle trying to sell the grip.

Obviously I could have made this purchase from any authorized dealer. I have had good luck with B&H Photo in the past and I still believe in customer loyalty. If they treat you well they have earned your business.

That being said, when I had the trouble I became frustrated and needed to take a break from my computer. Please take note that I did not blame anyone other than myself for missing the sale.

Thank you for your response.

cam.79,

Can that DX lens be used safely with the D750?

I am not familiar with Jet.com and it has been suggested that the camera might be gray market. I would not be interested in that for the same reason I am skeptical about refurbished product. I like the 1 year warranty backing me up.

Thank you for your response.

I sympathize and wish we could do more to help, but our hands are tied.

The Nikon D750 camera is protected by Nikon USA's unilateral price program. That program sets the minimum selling price authorized retailers are permitted to sell the camera for, and limits the addition of certain Nikon accessories as free items unless specifically authorized by Nikon USA as a limited time promotion or instant rebate.

The Nikon D750 was, for a period of time, available with several free accessories including the Nikon MB-D16 accessory. Nikon USA has since withdrawn or discontinued that promotion and authorized retailers are now prohibited from offering this. Nikon USA enforces this unilateral price program rigorously and their penalties for violations are severe.

B&H Photo at this time may not sell the D750 for below the minimum price dictated by Nikon USA nor are we permitted to offer the MB-D16 as a free accessory. I am sorry.

A kick in the head that goes along with a good swift kick in my own rear end! The regret possibility was the feeling that helped me finally make my decision to purchase the D750. I was just trying to do it in the way that would benefit me most. Selling the grip would have allowed me to purchase a head for my tripod or monopod and possibly a good sling/strap.

Aren't you my "rich uncle" Jerry?! To have two of them must be delightful.

I haven't decided whether I am keeping the Elan IIe, but I am leaning towards letting it go.

The 6D was tempting, but ultimately I decided the older technology was not what I wanted.

Thank you for your response.

I'm sorry that you missed your deal. I know this does not help your situation, but I want to point out that it does speak to the integrity of the owners of B&H. There are legal fictions that some businesses take advantage of in order to do business on the Sabbath. B&H doesn't play those games, and I think that is to their credit. Again, I'm sorry you missed the deal.
