I am just venting...

I meant to purchase the Nikon D750 with 24-120mm lens kit with the free battery grip from B&H on Friday June 16. I even updated my account information and password earlier in the week to ensure that I would have no trouble when I went to complete the purchase. Unfortunately when I tried to log on around 9:00PM CST I found that purchases from the website were not available due to the company's observance of shabbat. No problem. The site stated that I could order again starting at 8:45PM EST on Saturday.

Fast forward to Saturday. I missed the sale!!!

My purchase of the kit was with the knowledge that I would then sell the battery grip to reduce the cost. Now what I thought would cost me $1700 to $1750 after selling the grip is $2300 instead and out of my grasp. B&H and Nikon both now state that they do not know of or anticipate this deal again in the near future. Even if I tried to purchase the refurbished camera and lens, which I am not totally comfortable with, it would cost me $2200.

The D750 was my sweet spot. I was not considering the D610 even though it is a great camera. I wanted to avoid purchasing the older technology for the same cost as the D750 kit. Please do not rail on me for this. I know the technology changes the minute something becomes available.

I am now dealing with the frustration of what to do. I wanted the camera now as I am getting back into photography as motivation to become more active. Any camera would do right?!

It has been 20+ years since I used my Canon EOS Elan IIe with Canon EF 30-85mm. I liked the D750 because of its feature set and its full frame sensor which is what I felt I would move to in the long run.

I like perspective photography, street photography, portraiture, nature, landscapes, wildlife, etc. I really enjoy photographing whatever catches my eye at the moment. I was hoping to get a good all around camera with a good all around lens and now I am lost again after what amounts to a couple of months worth of research.

All constructive comments and recommendations are welcome!

You can look into Canon. And that lens will still work. Not a great lens as compared to today's stuff, but pretty good. Yes, I am a Canon shooter. I will let the Nikon tribe tout their cameras to you. You also might get input from the Sony and Olympus tribes.
Most of what you listed you want to do would be well done with an APS-C camera. Just buy EF lenses (full frame), I have both an APS-C (7DII) and FF (6D) Canon models and all the lenses I bought are FF (EF) except one, and I gave that to my daughter when she fell in love with it.

You can start with an APS-C model, smaller, lighter etc for a lot less money and upgrade to FF at a later date. If you go to the Canon Refurb site at their on-line store you can get a great deal and they have the same warranty as new.

I would stick with the current or only one generation back models. 80D or 70D, or even the 77D, possibly the T6s. If you only buy FF lenses then you can update in future by buying the body only. I am thinking about the upcoming 6DII, possibly even replacing both my present bodies with it. I did a quick look and believe the 6DII would outclass the D750. Just get an APS-C body and wait a year or so while you get back into things and learn digital. By then the 6DII will be down in price a bit and maybe even something new will come out.

I think you really missed it! My guess that the next time Nikon reduce the price of the D750 is when after they introduced the replacement model.

I had hoped for this too. Unfortunately both Nikon and B&H Photo told me that since it was a promotion, and the promotion was over-with, they could not help me. I have accepted that answer even though it was not what I was hoping for.

Thank you for your concern.

Thank you for all of the information. I was not aware there was a 6DII planned. Neither was Canon sales!

Might be because the reported announcement date is June 28 or 29 with shipping to start in August.

If you don't mind buying a refurb, I just got an email from Nikon showing you can get a refurb D750 for $1399.95. A whole lot of folks here have bought and recommend refurbished cameras.

I saw that a short time ago. If the sites were correct about the price it may be too expensive still although I could use my EF 30-85mm to hold me over until a rich uncle passes away and I can afford another lens.

Thanks for the links

I saw that this morning, but with the refurb AF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm f/4G ED VR lens it would still be $2200 which is still out of my budget. I do not think I could trust a refurb with only a 90 day warranty either. My last name is synonymous with Murphy.

Thank you for your response.

You could have gotten this deal from any Nikon dealer. The sale was advertised well in advance, late May to early June AFAIK. I have no idea why you let it go if it was something you wanted so badly and couldn't afford without. You can wait and see what is offered at the next Nikon sale; they have them every 6 months. This one, however, was the biggest savings I've seen for a while.

You will just have to save more money, and be prepared to jump when the deals go rolling by.

By the way, Ritz and Walmart have the D750 with 24-120 for around $2000; not too far off from your target and you won't have to hassle trying to sell the grip.

That is likely to be grey market. Nikon USA will not repair grey market items, under warranty or not.
