I'll bet you didn't recently buy a new camera. Yes, I can open raw files with all my cameras except the one I bought new a few months ago, Nikon D500.

I can open raw files from my new D500 with Nikon's raw converter but it opens them as a large Tif file very sluggishly and slow and the Nikon NX Capture program is inferior to even Elements' raw converter in it's controls not to mention far behind full Photoshop's ACR which has all my presets I've been using for years.

I looked back to your previous threads, and posts. I see you started a "Thread" about the "Canon IV" RAW not opening. I feel you have a Canon 5D Mark III, and 5D Mark IV. Canon does publish (for free) Canon PP for both versions of the cameras. What is your aversion to using this to "open" your RAW images for review. The version that was in the box with your 5D Mark IV will not only open RAW from the 5D IV, but all previous Canon cameras. If you don't have the CD, you can certainly download the CPP version from the Canon website. You are asking for Adobe to upgrade a totally obsolete program CC6, to comply with a camera, made by Canon long after the release of their software. If you were to use a Adobe "free" software, you would be able to at least view your CR2 files. I suggest you either spend the dime, or look at other PP software. The Adobe CC, is not a fortune, but is fully supported, and regularly updated, and resides on your computer for daily use.

CS6 just loaded in new machine with Microsoft 7. Open a file and small pics in raw are there with jpgs. Click one on RAW and Adobe says cannot open. A window opens and allows you to go to a useless site and by phone Adobe does not support CS6 by phone. Any help would be appreciated. Do I have to go to CC? Affinity opens raw but cannot use it because all I see is file numbers not previews.

Nearly every time someone posts something like Can Not Open Raw this issue is essentially the same. The version of ACR associated with your copy of Ps or Lr is too old and does not include your camera. Or look at it as your camera is too new and you will have to wait until the next update to ACR. If you are using Ps CC or Lr CC that wait should not be long.

Your specific issue is most likely, as I, you are using Ps CS6, the last update of ACR for that was v. 9.1.1. I'm OK because my cameras are older. Another thing that may be happening if your cameras are not actually new is that you were opening and uploading your Raw files from you camera now with ARC but with a Windows Application. In fact I used to do just that with Vista and 7. But that ap is missing from Windows 10 so I have to use the Adobe ap. With Vista I could not even get to ACR v. 9.1.1. As soon as I moved to Win 10 I could run ARC 9.1.1, Again for me, not an issue.

Check your system to see what it is trying to use to move or upload files from your camera to your PC with. You might have to work on that, or is your Camera is (too) new for CS6 and ARC in any version, use your Camera's supplied software to open Raw files and convert to DNG files. Also Adobe has a stand along Raw to DNG converter that should work with any Adobe / Windows combination.

You might want to think about Windows 10 and Ps CC / Lr CC as well.

I am not new to this issue. Terry White from Adobe personally replied to me back in April, ..."You have two choices: Subscribe to the CC Photography Plan at $9.99/month and have the latest version of PS and Lr CC which will let you use your new D500 files
or
Convert every RAW file every time with the FREE DNG converter: https://helpx.adobe.com/photos...e-dng-converter.html

When I used his url above a very nice and user friendly DNG dialog box opened which did the trick and even I could follow it. I hadn't seen this box come up before in my searches. The Conversion process takes an inconveniently long time but it works and enables me to see my raw files and to work on them in ACR at last. I can live with that till I make up my own mind to subscribe to CC.

However, since then, the DNG converter comes up saying "there are no raw files to convert" when I point it at the folder. Since I have done nothing new since I got it to start working the first time, same camera, same computer and system, I tend to think something else has gone on behind the scenes outside of my computer. I am still in a quandary.

I had the same problem, google Camera RAW 9.1 then install it. THEN go in and make sure its there. I had to install it about 5 or 6 times to get it to work.
Then I started having other problems and just switched to CC

Do you still have CS5?
If so open Bridge 5 then load your files there.

OP,

If you have a new camera, your Photoshop CS6 uses a version of Adobe Camera Raw that cannot handle the files. And you can:

1. Install Adobe DNG converter and use that to convert your RAW to DNG, which is Adobe's own version of RAW that CS6 can handle just fine. The DNG converter is free to download from the Adobe website, but you should Google and research DNG before converting all your RAW to that format. There have been some problems reported. You may want tooarchive your original RAW files, as well as the DNG files made from them. That will take up a lot more space on your hard drives.

2. Purchase Lightroom 6 for about $140. It can be used to organize your images and handle RAW conversions, then pass the images off to CS6 for completion. Lightroom 6 is being kept up to date and will work with the latest cameras.

3. Use some other RAW converter to make TIFF files, which can be further processed in CS6.

4. Get Photoshop CC to replace CS6. PS CC includes Adobe Camera Raw up to 9.10, will handle the latest cameras and is being updated regularly. This is part of the $10 a month subscription (1 year prepaid).

If you have a new computer (which I think is the case), are still using a camera whose RAW files you handled with CS6 without problem on an old computer, and have reinstalled Photoshop CS6 on the new computer from a disk or stored download, it's quite possible that an older version of Adobe Camera Raw was installed along with it.

To check what version of ACR is installed, simply open Photoshop and look under the "Help" menu > "About Plug-Ins" > "Camera Raw" (click on the info box to close it, when done). If it's not Camera Raw 9.1.1.xx, download the installer here: https://helpx.adobe.com/camera-raw/kb/camera-raw-plug-in-installer.html (Note: scroll to the bottom of the page to get the correct ACR 9.1.1 installer for CS6... Do not use 9.10.xxx installer, which is for later versions of Photoshop and is not compatible with CS6.)

Photoshop CS6 runs fine on Windows 7, 8 or 10. No need to update the OS, unless you want to for other reasons.

I agree, something odd is going on. If you were using Windows 10 I might have a guess as MS is about to put out a major update for it and has been tweeking Win 10 with small updates the last few weeks. And I keep noticing tiny changes. But MS is barely supporting Windows 7 at this point. Most likely the URL you are using has some annoying change. You might contact Adobe again. Good luck.

Thanks to all for the help. I finally used the Mark IV disc and opens IV and III with ease and can save quickly as a tiff file.

I don't want a large Tif file straight out of the camera. I want a raw file in 16-bit to manipulate in Adobe Camera Raw. When I am ready to save my final file I will save it as a Tif.

That's what is called "A ton of bricks moment."

Another reason you don't want Tifs is because when you open them in Camera Raw for raw processing they are handicapped in their capabilities exactly like JPEGs, e.g. limited options for white balance, etc.
