I suppose someone could pack the 600mm lens body full of enough C4 to kill hundreds of people. I'm not sure how dense C4 is but I'm pretty sure you could pack a couple of lbs. of it in there. I did some calcs and assuming the interior volume of big lens is 500 ml you could conceivably fit about 30 oz. of stuff into it. I know i'm mixing imperial and metric but I did the numbers in ml and grams and converted to oz. assuming a density of 1.72 g/ml. It could be done and it could cause a hell of a lot of damage.

http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-463117-1.html#7780535I created a thread parallel to this one presenting documentation that the claims which began this thread are completely false, but people continue to comment here and have virtually ignored my parallel thread

having to work in security goes with working harder. when we have to give up rights and priveliges for safety, the terrorist have already won. when we can go to concerts and public events without being searched or having to carry our valuables in transparent bags or spending 11/2 hrs. getting on a plane, then we can claim victory. homeland security works for us, we should be the ones favored.
In truth, the terrorists have not won

When I went to the Red Bull air races at Indy last October they had no such restrictions...I got some pretty decent shots (but I didn't have to contend with a whole lot of chain link fence, either)
Rules posted for Indy 500 don't have those restrictions either.
What do we have to do to convince you to consider the possibility that the post which started this thread might be Fake News???
The race rules very clearly state that all cameras are OK and most supports are OK

Yes, because every time someone posts something here, this stupid thread pops up to the top of the list, and more people are exposed to this Fake Truth, which might actually discourage some from going to the race.
Added: some things are true and some things are false, and that should matter in discussions like this. IMS is
not being unfair to fans, the terrorists have
not "won", and the rules have
not changed since the air races last year.
Their website says you can bring DSLRs and long lenses. Just don't interfere with other people.
Yes fake news, everyone has their panties all bunched up. Besides terrorist don't use cameras, they user themselves.
Think I saw a few 600mm lenses in the crowd, anyone get any shots of the Indy? Changing it back to Criminal Minds.

Actually, today many people need a 14 foot seat, or so it seems.

A little research on this may clear some things up, go to the Indy 500 web site and the Gate Search Policy. Cameras, camera tripods are allowed, no mention of any type of lens at all. No drones, selfie sticks, guns and knives, can't skate in, can't use your golf cart to get in, no drugs [especially while driving that golf cart and carrying an umbrella, which is allowed]. It does say "Professional cameras (Concerts Only) are not allowed, I have no idea what they mean by a concert, maybe they hold music concerts there. No bicycles thru the gate. And, check your cooler size!
"The following items are permitted inside the Indianapolis Motor Speedway:
Coolers (restricted to no larger than 18”x14”x14”, coolers may be hard or soft sided).
Food and beverages.
Binoculars, scanners and cameras.
Camera stands (tripods, monopods, etc.) as long as they do not cause a safety hazard or obstruct the view of others.
Strollers, lawn chairs and folding camping chairs.
Flags as long as they do not obstruct the view of others.
Umbrellas as long as they do not obstruct the view of others. The umbrella’s user takes sole responsibility for the safe use of the umbrella.
Carts and wagons are allowed every day except Race Day. The use of carts and wagons may be restricted in some areas.
Mobility aids used by guests with disabilities. Guests are responsible for securing unattended wheelchairs and scooters. IMS reserves the right to prohibit any device based on size or other considerations."
