Canon Printer Ink Scam

I am using the Canon PIXMA MX922 and the screen shows that ink is low and needs to be replaced. I just keep on printing and I get a ton more out of the ink cartridge. It uses 5 ink cartridges and would cost an arm and a leg to replace every time it says to replace. Also as many of you do I purchase a different brand that is made for this printer, been using LD cartridges with no problem. Good luck no matter what you decide to do.

OBTW, I use only LD Inks in my printer and do not have problems related to ink. I think that whether Canon, or LD, or other brand, you are worse off to mix brands than to use a single off brand. I have bought from Amazon and directly from LD at the same cost.

Tell me about it...I have a Canon inkjet / scanner combo, and the scanner won't work if the ink's too low!

I bought an HP OfficeJet Pro 8620, because it works with their Instant Ink program, and it scans & prints double-sided. The printer communicates with HP directly, and they send you ink automatically before you need it. I know it's a bit Big Brother, but all you pay is $10/mo for up to 300 prints. You can roll over up to 300 prints too. My wife is a teacher and is always printing up 30 copies of something, but what I love is that I can print 8-1/2 x 11 full color prints for the same price as a sheet of b&w text.

Oh, and since HP is paying the tab for the ink, the cartridges are filled to the top and last a really long time.

I do realize that this printer is not built anything like the tanks HP built in the 80's, but hopefully this one will last long enough that it pays for itself. So far so good.

I was gifted a Canon 5320, which is also one capable of printing CD/DVD. Recently (within the last year) my local K-Mart has started carrying cartridge refills a a fraction of the price of Canon. I've been using these, and while they don't seem to last any longer, at least they don't cost me an arm and a leg! For plain B&W printing, I use a Brother Laser printer. Only use the Canon for colour.

Wow, does anyone still FAX. I have a FiOS system at home and Verizon told me I'd need a separate old school wire phone line put in for FAXing. Assuming my PC even had a FAX MODEM (they have not for many years - 2000 Pentium III one did - now recycled).

I also have FIOS and a FAX machine does indeed work as advertised. . . . at least mine does.

There's FaxZero, eFax and other services that you can use on the web if you really need to. I haven't used a fax in years.

One thing to be aware of with Canon, not sure if this applies to other ink jets. Canon gives you a low ink warning because if an ink actually runs out and those nozzles go dry, the Canon head will be ruined permanently. I think this is because the Canon process uses heat to propel the ink.

Also for cleaning clogged heads I've had success setting the head in a shallow container of Windex. For me it worked, more than once.

I agree with another poster, it really burns me up that an all in one won't scan if it shows ink low. Also why can't I print in B&W if a color ink is low!

I fixed that last issue by getting a Free (from Craigslist) Okidata Office volume prints both sides, 2400 dpi laser printer. Great for printing mailing labels, invoices, postage for eBay sellers & general office printing. A monochrome laser printer cost is much less per page than inkjet. Especially when I refill the laser cartridge instead of buying new. 1 cartridge is good for 4,000 pages with a duty cycle of 12,000 pages a month.

But do you use carbon paper & a typewriter? Lol 😂 Now that's old school.

My wife will be feverishly texting our daughter, planning a get together or something similar. I always say why don't you just pick up the phone and call her? It would take much less time imho. This is not directed to the poster I quoted, just provided a jumping off point.

As others have mentioned here on UHH, that's why refilling your own cartridges is a really good idea. Not only will it save you an enormous amount a money; if you are changing all the carts out as soon as you get a low warning you will never get to that point of running out of ink in any one of your cartridges. I rotate and refill my carts as soon as I get a low warning on one of my carts. This procedure saves more ink in the long run because I'm not resetting and cleaning the heads every time I put in a new cart. One time for all instead of 8 times for each cart. Someone already mentioned him but check out Jose Rodriguez on YouTube. He has a full set of videos that explain just about everything that you will need to know about refilling cartridges.

This just chaps my grits
Canon charges an arm and a leg for their ink
And THEN fails the cartridge when it is still 30% full
No clue if Epson, HP, Brother, and the rest do the same as I've not owned those
But Canon has gotten MUCH worse since I first bought into them with their Pixma ip5200

Photo is of a Canon PGI-225 BK cartridge which will no longer allow the printer to print because it registers as Empty
Yes - the liquid ink reservoir on the left is now empty - - but the sponge is nearly full - or about 30+ % of the cartridge capacity

Remember, Canon doesn't make ink. They go out to bid for it, just as you should.

EtOH is not Isopropyl - it is Ethyl Alcohol. My body does not tolerate EtOH real well, but when I am dealing with clogged printer heads, I think about it a lot.

Actually, I would think the EtOH may work better than Isopropyl as it is a lighter, more aggressive alcohol and is more likely to dissolve both polar and non-polar compounds; it also dissolves better in water and so will remove the water from the electronics much faster.

WRT half full canon cartridges, try pushing the Okay button when the printer says it is out of ink and it is not. Mine will continue to print until you can see through the bottom of the cartridge.

EtOH - C2H5OH - I have no problem with, in fact I enjoy it (Sláinte), but I agree with pushing the "Okay button". I have no problem with the use of Canon inks or printers, I suspect the OP is just on an uninformed rampage and has done insufficient research.

I would love to have an old (maybe Royal or Smith-Corona) manual typewriter. There ARE some things a printer can't do. And yes, I still use carbon paper for a number of documents.

When I had two Canon printers, I used only Staples store brand ink. The last I looked, they no longer carried it. They tried to tell me they didn't sell enough; I said, "BS, you and I both know the store brand ink virtually flew off the shelves." I wonder if they were sued, bought by Canon or just bought off. I now have a cheap Epson printer; the ink lasts longer and, when I disassembled a cartridge, it was indeed empty.

A big chain like Staples was no doubt bought off. I've been using this stuff for about 12 years, with no issues whatsoever. Identical operation and results to Canon cartridges, at one-third the price or less:
