Ok! Yes I'm an amateur at all this but! I use the HP Office jet 8600 PRO for printing my photos, for up to 8x10! Anything larger I take my memory stick to Walmart, only because if I don't like the results I don't have to pay! The Young folks at the photo area are knowledgeable (at least at my store), helpful, and are pretty good at crituqing! I am sure this is not the case everywhere! But on the most part, I do it at home. If you think Canon ink is expensive it's over a hundred bucks for 1 black and the 3 colors! The $2 exchange still keeps the price over a hundred. The good news is the young man (Chris @ Staples who sold me the printer) explained in detail pros and cons of laser and ink jet! The laser was way more expensive to operate! He told me I could get as many as 1500 to 2000 prints out of the cartridges, to my surprise I got 2500 out of one set! But everything has a price, laser is better quality! Just my $.02 worth.

Anyone tried the G series Canon printers, they have refillable bottles.

I bought a G3200 about 3 months ago to replace my Pixma 4920 that died. The ink bottles cost about the same as the ink cartridges my 4920 used, but hold about 10 times as much ink. They claim 6000 pages of black and 7000 pages of color for one set of tanks. I used to spend about $300 per year on ink, so the new printer should pay for itself in a little over a year. So far I'm really happy with it. I rarely print photos and haven't tried any yet, so I can't comment on how well it does with them, but text and charts are good. The scanner works great too.

This sounds like the answer for everything except large prints. I would be curious how 4x6 pictures turn out on it, since there are only 3 colors. Canon claims that refilling the ink tanks is not messy! Really? I will have to consider this printer when my office all-in-one printer bites the dust.

I still haven't printed any photos. Refilling the ink tanks is definitely not messy. This is my first aii-in-one; I previously had a separate Canon flatbed scanner. The scanner works great, and the copy function is very convenient. Just put your document in and press either the black and white or color button and you have a copy (not saved electronically). Need more than one copy? Then press the button as many times as the number of copies you need.

That is really good to know because the one time I tried refilling, it was a disaster! I would probably only print the occasional picture to it since my Canon Pro 10 is a dedicated photo printer. Thank you...and let me know how a picture turns out if you ever print one.

But do you use carbon paper & a typewriter? Lol 😂 Now that's old school.

My wife will be feverishly texting our daughter, planning a get together or something similar. I always say why don't you just pick up the phone and call her? It would take much less time imho. This is not directed to the poster I quoted, just provided a jumping off point.

Actually, if your wife and daughter are anything like me and my daughter, texting is way faster than calling...plus I can get my say in before she interrupts me. If we call, it'd usually an hour long!

Sorry, OP, to comment on something off-topic!

I never shut my printers off, just a way to save on ink.

Please explain further.

Thanks Ed
