I just tell people I was taking a picture of the sunspots when a commuter jet got in the way. Technically, that's exactly how it turned out. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw something flying into the shot, so I pressed the shutter button. I just call it "Sunspot Photobomb".

I had an opportunity several months ago for a similar shot but I could not get the camera on it fast enough. As I recall the plane's silhouette only lasted a couple of seconds. Like a dog that lost the rabbit I stuck around for a while hoping to get another chance. The chance I got was a fat chance.

I definitely got lucky on that one. It was even timed perfectly so the jet plumes distorted the edge of the sun. I've had a couple of other shots with planes in front of the sun, but nothing that big or dramatic.

Sunspots, not flares. Don't have that much magnification!

I just use your standard 70-300 lens with a 9-stop ND filter (or stacked with another 3-stop or two filters). Depending on how clear the sky is (easier when the sun is low in the sky), I can vary the aperture from maybe as low as f/11 up to f/32 as needed to keep the image from being too bright to see much.

Shutter speed as fast as it'll go: 1/4000

All done in manual mode.

If you're lucky, you can catch a plane flying in front of the sun!

Cool Shot!
I will have to give it a go. I have a Tamron 150-600 that perhaps I will see if I can adapt the filter to.
Thanks
