I am thinking about getting a canon EF-S IS f/3.5-5.6 is standard zoom lens for my canon t3i for carry around use. I shoot scenes, people, wildlife, etc. Is this a good choice?

I have a T3I....my Sigma 18-250 is on it 90% of the time. Think hard about that one!

I have a T3i and my Tamron 18-270 is on it 99% of the time. It covers as wide as I need and decent tele. I shoot architecture, family events, backyard wildlife and gardens with it.

The two above replies are better choices than the Canon kit lens's. Look at the Sigma.

Or look at the Canon EF-S 18- 135, either STM or USM. It depends what you are looking for. The longer zoom ranges make more compromises from a quality perspective across the focal length range. I have shorter and longer lenses than the 18-135, but the 18-135 is a very useful default lens.

I have a Sigma 18-200 that lives on my T1i.

I have a 60D (which I bought instead of the T3i) and I have the Tamron 18-270 on it which I used for taking photos of soccer games as well as birds, landscape, etc. I have displayed and sold a number of photos taken with this combo. I would recommend the Tamron 16-300 which a friend is using on his T3i and getting great photos.

And another thing. I gave my daughter a 24x16 print from one of my photos made with the 60D and Tamron lens. She had it framed and it is the centerpiece on her dining room wall.

While I have never used any of these super zooms, remember that they may not be as sharp as you would like. Convenient, yes! IQ? Not the best.

I assume you mean the EFs 18-55 mm f/3.5-5.6, or did you mean some other lens? There are a number of lenses with the same f/3.5-5.6 maximum aperture range. If you do buy one, get the new STM versions. The STM (stepping motor) kit lenses are very competent lenses at a great price and the image quality will exceed that of most, if not all, super zooms.

That depends on what you mean by better choices. The Canon STM kit lenses (the 18-55 STM and the 55-250 STM) are sharper and have better IQ than either of those lenses. Don't take my word for it. Check DXOmark and various reviews.

Find a used copy of the Canon 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM.

Ditto. I say so because I own and have used one of these long zooms. It does reach out yet IQ falls short noticeably in my eyes.
