Best places to sell used photo equipment.
Just a general question about selling on the Hog, what insurances are in place that the buyer gets the item, the seller gets the money? I would guess that Paypal is perhaps the answer?

Definitely PayPal helps but also check the feedback the buyer or seller has received on this site as you would on eBay or any other site.
If you don't mind putting up a ad on Craigslist or any site that has buyers and sellers, and dealing with shipping, you should be able to get double what the large NYC retailers would give you. This has been my experience getting quotes from B&H and Adorama. I enjoy the communication I have with prospective buyers and sellers and have sold and bought quite a few items on many sites, including UHH.

No assurances.
I don't think PayPal helps on money transfers.
That said I have been 100% happy with UHH transactions buying and selling.
Near twenty years selling used film gear on eBay. It has supplemented both my part time income nicely, and prices are rising for me.
Considering what the people who buy camera's for resale have to "knock down" on the prices, to make any profit, they can't begin to compete with resale direct to consumers (most eBay buyers).
Just the facts Jack!!! Can't be done. I'd mention Craigslist, were it not for the muggings, robbery, killing and raping done through those connections. Particularly in the big cities.
eBay and Etsy ( the other up and coming buy/sell site. Doing well there also!.

In general, will you get a better price for your clean mid-level used photo gear at e-bay or one of the big New York City photo retailers?
Check KEH in Atlanta. Look up your equipment on KEH and Ebay to get a rough idea of what you can expect as far as price.
I do all my selling (and buying) on eBay now. You can check what that type of item is going for and list yours accordingly. It's a particularly good area for any film camera equipment since there are quite a few collectors who are looking for vintage equipment. I sold the first SLR I bought for three times what I paid for it about three years ago. (This was a highly collectible item, however, so not a typical sale.)
Thanks folks, for all the suggestions. It appears that e-Bay and Craig's List might be the way to go.
