In general, will you get a better price for your clean mid-level used photo gear at e-bay or one of the big New York City photo retailers?

Most of what I buy or sell used is on Craig's list.
The big NY guys will give you the least money, but it's realtivly hastle free if that is worth more to you than money!!

Research what your equipment is going for on Ebay, deduct 10 percent for Ebay and 5 percent for PayPal. Then go to B&H photo and you can get an on line estimate range for your used equipment. Check also KEH.
Good luck in whatever direction you go in.

Most definitely on eBay! I got estimates several times for items at Adorama and B&H, but decided to sell on eBay. On eBay I made about 5 times as much as the estimates every time!

I buy and sell on Ebay. If you are careful and patient you can often purchase an item at a low price, then later possibly sell at a higher price and offset the 13% you lose to Ebay and Paypal. When selling it is important to provide clear, quality photos of your gear, allow returns if not satisfied, and frequently list at start price of 99 cents. (lets say you are selling a Canon 1.4 50mm lens....do an Ebay search, go to SOLD auctions, and get a sense of selling price and more importantly how many bids were placed on a given item. This will give you a good idea of what the demand might be for what you wish to sell.)

Find a fair selling price for it and sell it here to other hogs. You will get more money and the buyer can get an honest a=fair deal. Both parties make out.

I sell everything on ebay - photo gear, cars, motorcycles, boats - you name it. If you want the maximum price, and you're willing to advertise ($$) and wait, that's another way to go. I check ebay to see what the item has been selling for and then post it. It's gone in a week, and I have money.

Over the years I have found that Craigslist does the best job of selling your photo equipment. I have this rule that I can't buy a new lens or body until I sell one. When you sell your equipment to a retail store, B&H, KEH, Amazon, etc. you have to remember that they are going to resell the equipment and they have to allow for a profit. On the other hand, if you sell to an individual who will actually use the equipment you don't have that issue to deal with. The one thing about selling it yourself is that it may take more time than selling it to a retail store. The theory is that you have to be in the right time and the right place. Always meet in a public venue, I use Starbucks or McDonalds. I have never sold anything on Ebay because Craigslist has worked for me. If however, you are in an area where Craigslist isn't available, Ebay may work for you. I have also used this site to sell equipment and have been very happy with the results. Good luck.

I have found that the best place to buy or sell used gear to and from photo enthusiasts with excellent feedback is fredmiranda.com.

In most cases you will realize a higher return selling òn your own. Remmber a dealer has to make a profit so he can't give you anywhere near top dollar. The dealer will have to pay you, hope he can move the gear quickly and then most likely have to collect sales tax, pay income tax on his profit and pay the overhead for his business. Unless you have a pressing reason to unload the gear selling on your own is the way to go.

MT Shooter is more than fair with his prices and he's a fellow Hog member. I recently unloaded all my Canon gear and he gave me 70% of value for the used gear, significantly better than the big places and it was convenient as I didn't need to sell items of individually. And, no, MT is not a relative and I don't get a cut of the action!

I second the Fred Miranda site:

Great place to do business, but they do charge a small fee.
Would be good to have several posts on the site though, so they know you're not there to just sell.
It's a great site for photo knowledge as well.

Not as casual as the hog...

Selling to retailers, you have to keep in mind that they need to make money when they resell, so you aren't going to make a killing, just a convenient way to sell or trade.

I sell all my equipment on Ebay. I watch what my item has sold for in the past and put a reasonable price on it, and, I get 50-90% more than trading it in or sending it in for trade.
