They are Verbally harassing the s--- out of him , calling him sadistic ,idiot. Plus others , that's not a opinion that's a verbal attack

What would you call him? Do you not see how wrong it is to do that to another human? Especially your own child? Only someone who is without empathy would even think of it. Envious of your own child? How about being proud of her instead? Would that ever cross your mind?

Do you know the family personally, you have no idea what they do in there own private lives , why would he even think of doing this if he never knew how his daughter would act , a lot of family's are different thinking than you may be , and what makes think he is without
empathy , you have no idea how they think , but we all know how you jump to conclusions of your own making ,

I think it's largely because we all have relatives like that, they may have other redeeming qualities but ... yes this chafes, you get to pick your friends but you don't get to choose your family. It's pretty much a male thing. Girls grow into women and boys grow into bigger boys has been said many times and if you think that's not true ask your wife (or ex wife).

There seems to be an odd belief that "it's not very manly to show how you really feel" personally I think it's cowardly to hide behind this bull.

How many women have said "I know he acts all tough and mean but inside he is soft with a heart of gold"...

Surely it's not that hard to tell your family that you love them.

Several posters on here expressed their opinions in an adult manner. Many resorted to childish behavior. The cowards who hide behind their keyboards and deride others and call them names remind me of lynch mobs and Antifa protesters. Put them in a group and they're Bad A33gs, but by themselves they're Cowards. A sense of humor requires intellect, the ability to take a joke requires good self esteem. Most of the posters in this thread have neither.
I don't know whether the OPs idea is a good joke, that depends on his daughter and their relationship. But the postings on here attacking him are made by a bunch of W.I.M.P.s, who never had any guts until they could hide behind their computer screens.

I agree with the rest of this group. Create a loving moment for your daughter to remember and cherish forever; not some crazy stunt. I love the bigger box idea with another nested inside - fun!

Thanks!

My lovely 23 yr old daughter has developed a love for travel as well as a talent for photography well beyond my abilities, and I'm a bit jealous.
Her equipment is becoming more sophisticated and correspondingly expensive as well.
Combine that with my love of practical jokes (at her expense), I've developed a intricate & devious plan to absolutely devastate her and then gleefully surprise her at the same time. Please tell me what you think.

We have plans in place to go back to beautiful Iceland this summer for 2 weeks mainly to explore the various waterfalls and mountain peaks, photographing them in detail as we go.

Her birthday will fall during this time, and I plan on upgrading her equipment to a Nikon D810 as a surprise. Of course I will have brought it along, bragging that it is 'MY' new camera.

Now for the practical joke:

I plan to "borrow " her current Nikon D7200 body with the intent of photographing her, as we stand in a precarious position above a cliff , a waterfall or other similar location.

As she stands watching, I'll make a point to change out a lens on what she assumes is the current D7200, fumbling to the point were she sees me 'accidently' drop her camera body perhaps hundreds of feet down to the ground or into the water. I will of course have changed out the D7200 body with an old non-working D40 i just picked up off of EBay for a few bucks -having safely ensconced the D7200 in my bag.

Oh, the look of sheer horror i expect to see on that beautiful face.

Of course being the dutiful dad I am, I will immediately offer up 'my' brand new D810 and the corresponding lenses as a sacrifice for her loss ( which was really for her anyway). I'm just wondering at what point should I hand back the original D7200 and try not to laugh so hard?

Given the learning curve for the D810 you'd better serve her by pre gifting her so she can be familiar with it prior to the trip. Control locations, settings do differ between cameras. If you get her a GPS it'll need the 10 point connector. I got a decent one at Camera for about $50.

I would have done it differently.

I would have given her the broken camera and enthusiastically happily presenting it as the deal of the decade. Just a few fixes and it will as good as new. She will think you've lost your mind!

When that's done and her disappointment has filled her all up with how stupid her father is, I would, casually, give her the new camera and watch her sad face turn happy.

Before you buy the D810, you might want to wait to see if Nikon brings out a replacement this year that beats it hand over fist. I'm thinking that it will have the AF system of the D500/D5 and the Expeed 5 processor and may have more mp's.

Why would you call the OP an idiot?
Tell us what you really think.
The OP had the balls to run his idea of a practical joke by the trusted Hog members BEFORE the fact. It seems, to me, like if he told us after the fact then maybe we could all call him names.
Do you think what he wants to do, or wanted to do when he posted this, is what has already happened?
Why is he an idiot?
If you go back in time, he posted a reply less than 10 minutes after his initial post. His reply basically said "I think your idea is better, I think you talked me into changing my mind about the whole thing.
Then the OP must have hit the unwatch button.

Oh, I have failed to consider the source.

As the people who talk funny say:
MY BAD
