A fast prime lens, 50mm, f1.2 or f1.8. Let the person learn something about photography instead of playing zoom.

I use the Nikon AF-S DX 16-85mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR on my D7100 as my primary lens

The super-zooms like the 18-200 and 18-300 are very soft at the long end. I have that same camera and am very happy with my AF 16-85mm Nikkor and AF-P 70-300 Nikkor.

SO many choices - so little time! -lol.
So much of a personal decision based on WHAT YOU like/want to shoot.
Whatever focal length works for you a bigger question (for me) is whether to get a DX lens - designed for the crop sensor in your camera - or to embrace the upward compatibility of a non-DX lens.

I shoot a crop sensor D90. I lean toward larger telephoto for wildlife and sports. But also on a budget so mainly rent the lenses.

I have used the nikon 18-300 twice (a DX lens) and love it!

As someone recently mentioned, buy used on ebay and try it. If you don't, like it, sell it on ebay.

I have a 7100 and I think the 18-140, 18-200 and 18-300 are all great choices. It all depends on how much weight you want to carry around and how much magnification you want. If in doubt, go with the 18-300. I usually carry that and the 35mm f/1.8G DX. I also recommend you look for these lenses refurbished by Nikon. Their refurbished equipment is indistinguishable from new and the prices are hard to beat.

My walk-around lens on my Nikons was an 18-200mm zoom. That allowed me to go from shooting a cathedral interior in Mexico to individuals on a park bench in San Diego. Or, when I was shooting my grandson's graduation, I could get him getting handed his diploma, group shots of him and his buddies, a wider shot of the audience and his proud mother's face as she watched, all without juggling lens changes.

When I went to Europe and the Mediterranean with my a6000 Sony, that same focal length (on a Sony lens) was perfect for everything from the Tower of Pisa to a weird street lamp in Athens.

Get yourself a nice Nikon 50mm. For a couple hundred bucks, you won't be disappointed.

The 35 F1.8 for sure. It is light, sharp, equivalent of a normal lens on a full frame camera, and relatively inexpensive. The 18 - 200 is a nice compact zoom that gives good results.
