My wife currently has a D3200. Its a good camera but I would like to upgrade her to a better one. I want her to stay with a cropped sensor and would like to get one with 2 card slots/tilt screen and maybe a touch screen. I was thinking maybe the D5300 or D7100.

Any Ideas?

If you insist on a tilt screen, then the d500 would be the best you could buy. If you want to save money and upgrade to a body with a built in focus motor, the d7200 would be your best bet, but you would have to sacrifice the tilt screen, which would be a worthy sacrifice for the benefits over the d3200. If you go with the d5300, save your money, not that much of an upgrade to the d3200 to justify upgrading, better off buying a new lens.

I'd definitely recommend either a 7100 or 7200. I have the former and it's a fantastic camera. As many others on this forum have, I'd strongly recommend you look for a camera refurbished by Nikon. I've had several of these and they're just great. By appearance and function you can't distinguish them from a brand new camera and the price is a lot less. The only downside is a 90 day warranty instead of a full year.

It is a good camera and certainly up to taking as good pictures as your wife (or most novice photographers)are capable of. Upgrading the camera would only be of practical use to someone who is a professional (for money making). The cost and arcane uses of a more expensive camera are not likely to be of use. The camera does not make for a great picture, the photographer does, (even with an inexpensive film camera).

What does she want? Take her to a camera shop and let her check them out.

The D5500 has a faster processor then the D7100. Touch screen. Articulating screen. One card slot. About the same size as the one she is using now. I have it and am quite satisfied. The D5600 is not worth the difference IMO.

The articulated screen is far more useful than dual card slots or a focus pin, (since your wife will need neither of those). Get anything from D5100- D5500; it is a great series!

I have a D5100 with articulating screen and a D7100 without. The D5100 I use with a telescope for star shots and for macro where the screen can be quite handy. The D7100 does everything else.

I started with the d3200 and later upgraded to the d7100. I love it. I bought it refurbished about two years ago and have shot thousands of pictures with it. It is great! Never regretted my decision even for a second.

My 5200 has a tilt screen, I used it very seldom...... but it sure was handy when I actually needed it ( shooting insects and flowers close tothe ground.) be sure its something she really needs , if not go with the 7100
