I don't know what this has to do with my preference for the a99M2.

Agree with you whole heartedly. Tgere will always be Canon and Nikon users until the are brought up by another camera manufacture. Until then everyone will have to live with the top three Camera Manufactures.

Does this new speed demon signal the death of certain Nikon and Canon offerings? Opinions solicited.

Yes! No! Maybe! Sorry, crystal ball's in the shop for a firmware update. Until I get it back that's the best I can do. All I can say is that on paper the A9 looks pretty good. So did the A7r II, which was touted by many to be a Canon and Nikon killer but I don't think it had as much impact as the pundits thought it would at the time. A lot of factors go into a decision to purchase a pro level camera body. The A9 with the battery grip will go head to head with the Nikon D5 and Canon 1Dx Mark II. Is it ready for prime time? Only the market will determine that. This isn't to say that Sony's not on track to get there, but I'm not selling my gear just yet.

Hi 'ptcanon3ti'...
I don't believe that the a99M2 is a Match for the a9 with the Matched 100-400mm Lens. Please see the following Videos, and then comment further.

The a99m2 is a better camera than the a9. The a99m2 43 megapixel with 12 frames per second a mount lenes.
While the a9 is 23 megapixels e mount lens mirrorless.
The features of the a99m2 are now starting to appear on the e mount camera but not the megapixels.
A 99m2 is a full frame mirror mounted camera vs the mirrorless frame camera. Software in the a99m2 will possibly be the same, while the weight and size of the a99m2 is bigger and heavier compared to the new a9. Price for the a9 is around $5200.00 and the a99m2 is $3200.00. Compare the two and then choice. I would purchase the a99m2 over the new Sony a9 anyday

I know exactly what you mean. And that is why I believe the damage to Nikon and Canon will be minimal. But if Sony priced it, say around $2000, where it would compete with the D500, I might revise that view.

True that not many will spring for a camera this costly. But what happens is that the new technology developed for a high end camera like this tends to trickle down into more mainstream cameras and then the masses benefit. Just imagine when this stacked sensor is more mainstream for instance. And not only for high speed bursts. I can think how this changes bracketing and HDR for instance. And also consider how focus bracketing could benefit.

And I am sure that the breakthroughs in Auto Focusing will appear in lower end cameras eventually too.

I find it interesting that Sony has chosen to put a 24-megapixel sensor in what will be seen as its flagship camera. Considering that their previous flagship cameras sported 42-megapixels this would appear to be a step backward but is consistent with the trend of other camera manufacturers, such as Nikon and their D500. I just find it all rather curious. Could it be that photographers are tired of dealing with enormous files that can print 6' X 9' prints when in reality they print 16" X 24" images at most?

I have a Nikon 1 V2 that will do 60 fps. Admittedly, its sensor is a little smaller than the Sony A9 but it will get me shots like the one I just posted.

All one has to do is look at the flagships of Canon's 1Dx II & Nikon D5 and to achieve their fast frame rates. Low megapixels in both those cameras and it's been that way for a long time. Large files are for another type of group entirely.

Hi 'band'... -- I 'BELIEVE' that DPR has indicated that the a9 PLUS the New 100-400mm GM Zoom can: "be NOW purchased for $500 more than the bare Nikon D5" ...that means $2800 (a9) & $2500 (100-400mm); ...have to get to MD appt. but I'll try to get you a confirmation later

Note that I was merely answering a Question about 'Speed of Autofocusing' when shooting FAST ACTION in Dim light.

BTW... I don't know anyone who wouldn't WANT an a99m2 for at LEAST static images.

So you're saying the a99m2 can't focus and shoot moving subjects? That seems kind of silly.

Good Morning All:

Let me join the conversation about the Sony a9. I have been a long-time fan and user of Sony cameras (F828, (2) Nex 7s, (1) 7 A7R and (1) A7RII. That said, I was a former Nikon user in my college days and also purchased vintage and mint later Nikon mechanical cameras as a collector. I rarely shoot film any longer. Yet, I appreciate Nikon's legacy and great quality as many of their cameras were in service during the Vietnam war
under the most trying jungle and war conditions and survived well.

I am interested in Sony's newest offering the a9. However, I am prepared to wait and see the shake out from users both professional, enthusiasts and others before making another commitment. My interest here on this site is photography (landscape, architecture, wildlife, and photo-journalism). I 'm not interested in another GAS attack, I've had too many. My thinking is to wait for the next generation of Sony's a9II and see what Sony offers as an upgrade. The a9 is an outstanding camera and puts both Nikon and Canon on notice that the "dog is barking at their door".

Best Regards To All
Chris

Hi:

Sony offered the a9 with 24 mega-pixels for the greater ISO rate, less noise and increased tracking speed. The buffer and computer needed this reduction in mega-pixels to achieve the greater ISO, shutter and frame rates. This is just a thing of physics and electronics. My guess is that as Sony continues to perfect their electronics we will see higher pixel counts. Sony is a leader in sensors along with Kodak. Nikon uses Sony CMOS sensors and Leica uses Kodak. Kodak had the first digital camera ever made. I almost bought a Kodak digital camera with 25 mega-pixel camera years back but, my wife at that time would have left me, it was $5K.

I'm sure that she would be happy to know that she is worth $5K. I would also suggest that you don't tell her if you wish to live!

It may be barking, but it still gets to sleep on the porch!
