Does this new speed demon signal the death of certain Nikon and Canon offerings? Opinions solicited.

Nikon and Canon aren't dead yet. We don't know what they have up their sleeves for the future. The competition is good it benefits us the most.

I will be interesting to see what happens now with Nikon and Canon. Im not a sports photographer but I would love to play with this beast to see what it does.

I read about that last night, and it seems to be quite a camera - in a class by itself. Are they using alien technology?

Cameras costing over $4,000 are not the bread and butter of camera companies. It gives them bragging rights to show off their technology, but the number of sales will be comparatively low. Similar offerings from Canon and Nikon are known for their physical toughness. It will take a while to see if this Sony can "take a lickin' and keep on tickin'."

Definitely, but I bet it will be a while before it is available as a rental. As for buying one - not me. A $4,500 camera would do nothing for me but put me farther into debt.

No, I am a Sony user. I will not signal the end of either Canon or Nikon. I shoot sports and have been shooting Canon for many years. Speed from a camera body, using the spray and pray method does not a great sports photographer. Sony may have camera bodies with great features. Sony does not have as large a selection of lenses that are available without purchasing Zeiss lenses in many instances. I hear complaints about Sony technical support for Sony users, amateur and Pro Users also.

I agree. The price tag will limit purchases to a certain segment.

So may be Sony can buy Nikon and have them make all the Nikkor for FE and E mount

I know exactly what you mean. And that is why I believe the damage to Nikon and Canon will be minimal. But if Sony priced it, say around $2000, where it would compete with the D500, I might revise that view.

A website suggested that Sony may purchase Nikon and rename it.
If you follow the history of Nikon, they started as a binocular company, cameras became and after thought.
Both Canon and Nikon use a great many sensors that are developed by Sony for use in cameras
Nikon is may be sliding producing new camera releases, increasing the new camera treadmill speed. When new cameras are added for the sake of making new models available to Nikon users, updating lenses and increasing the price when the first edition of the lens was just as good if not better.
The alternative for to adapt Canon and Nikon E-Mount lenses is Metabones a pricey method, $399 and up for their latest adapters.
Sony is such a diverse company and markets so many electronic devices it makes their website difficult to find the camera support.
Canon is the usual suspect to absorb Nikon, most true Nikon users would only use anything other than a Nikon branded camera when pigs fly

Interesting observations. Some folks seem to be permanently attached to one brand or another regardless of innovations from other companies that make their allegiances, let's say, less than optimally productive. Sometimes it's just a matter of money and the expense of changing systems. For me personally, I settled on Nikon after a foray with Canon and the concomitant expense of experimenting with 2 different systems. After careful analysis and thought, I came to the conclusion that Nikon produces more detailed and dimensional images even though I still like what Canon does for faces and the consumer-friendly and functional manner in which it has employed touch screen technology. It's a tough and competitive world out there, especially with the advent of cell phones with built in cameras that are constantly improving. And then there are the mirrorless alternatives that are capable of producing stunning images with considerably less weight. Interesting and perhaps unsettling times are ahead.

Real world tests and comparisons will tell us how good this camera really is. If it lives up to the specs it will really shake up the professional market. But if it can not deliver on pair with Nikon D5 and Canon 1DxII then it will not do much damage to Canon or Nikon but it will certainly put a lot of pressure on Canon and Nikon to enter the mirrorless market with serious cameras.
