I have several external drives and plug them into a port hub. I don't always plug the same HD into the same port. So my LR gets confused a lot. I've even had to re-import some pics a few times. That was maddening. But usually, if I tell LR where they are THIS TIME, it will work. I've never run into a situation where LR didn't accept the new info.

I posted a few days ago about having question marks next to my files from my external HD. I have tried about everything to connect back to LR with no success. I did the locate routine and it worked till I closed LR and when I opened it back up all the question marks were back, and it won't let me do it again. One thing I was reading about was doing a right click on the folder and choose "Hide This Parent" then click on the external HD folder and choose "Hide This Parent". At some point everything will disappear from the folders panel. Then restart LR and everything should come back to normal. Anyone ever try this and had any success. Sounds a little scary to me but I'm getting desperate at this time.
What are the odds of calling Adobe and having any luck? Are they good to work with? I was also wondering if you can just start all over with LR and reload all my files from my external HD?
Any suggestions on something other than LR, I do have PS.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,

Adobe is actually great at helping. I was on the phone with them for an hour once when I messed my catalog up and the guy was wonderful. They will ask if they can take over your computer, which I was willing to let them do. Working together we figured it out and we saved my catalog.

Someone already mentioned this, but maybe you didn't see it. Make sure that your computer is recognizing your external drive. You don't say if you're using a Windows computer or a Mac computer. I'll assume you are using a Windows PC. Write down the name of one of the files that has a question mark. Then open Windows Explorer and do a search for that file on your external drive. Make a note of where that file is. The go back to LR and associate that file with the location of the file.

Never Never Never use any other program to move, copy, rename, or delete a file other than LR - especially if it's a picture that you have imported into LR. LR can't keep track of files unless it's the program that you use to do these things.

The other thing to remember is to leave the external plugged in permanently if possible, if not always try to use the same USB socket to plug it in. (It looks as though AzPiclady had the same problem but realised how to get around it.)

There is NO reloading to do. The files you loaded simply reside one or more folders that get their folder/file names and corresponding drive loaded into the LR catalog. The only movement per se, is when you import from the camera to a folder. The problem is likely that the drives you used for the initial are now different.

Are the catalog and the photos both on the external drive or is the catalog on the C and photos on the external with some other letter. Any chance your external drive was say letter F when you did the initial work and then you shut your system down and now the external drive is G. Whatever combination you used initially you need to keep it consistent. I have my catalog on the C but my photos on and external. To avoid external drive moving letters, I used the WIN disk manager to hard wire my external to the same letter at boot time.

Felt the same way, my problem was I could see the files and they were in the right place but did not "add" them to the catalog, I kept trying to "import" photos to a folder where they already were, once I "add" them from the drive to the catalog problem solved, I also started using collections to edit, you tube collections, easy to use, hope that helps

Sorry, I missed the earlier post. What did you do outside of LR that caused it to "lose" your images?

This is just one reason why I will never use Lightroom. Everything I see posted here sounds like a royal pain with cataloging. LR just takes over. I don't want that. In fact, I don't want any program cataloging my photos for me. Seriously, the only time I tried Lightroom it screwed up my computer so bad that I had to reformat my hard drive and re-install Windows. Never again. Not worth the headaches.

Moved photos on the computer instead of Lightroom, if you move a folder in your documents Lightroom won't know where it is, once you move it in to a folder in Lightroom you will still have to add it to your catalog, what's really cool is when you store your raw files you don't have to create a separate place for the jpeg file the camera creates for you to view on the camera, Lightroom creates a sidecar file and stores that with the raw file, this way you only need a folder for your raw file

For you, it's all about control, huh.......

For me, LR is a lifesaver since I don't have to worry about where the files and images are and which file is the most recent one that I worked on....

Does both, allows me to know where my files are if I need the original raw file but by using collections I don't have to worry where they are, can place the same photo into different collections without going into the files, edit and remove photos without worrying about losing or damaging the raw file, you get both, make no mistake, if you have a lot of photos (I had over 5700) on your computer it pays to organize BEFORE importing into Lightroom, also the instructions you get assume you know and understand files in the computer and already have a system for filing your photos, there are several good systems on You Tube and internet, it pays to learn and plan a strategy BEFORE importing into Lightroom

Not a good way to judge LR. It has the largest user base for a reason and Adobe is breaking sales records. There is a reason for that. At some point you should realize that maybe, just maybe the issues are due to user errors.
