For those interested in using teleconverters Arthur Morris provides some insights. Here's a presentation he did at B&H. It takes him a few minutes to get into his presentation, but I've found sitting through it to be worth my time. I have gotten some very good shots with a 70-200mm and a 2x converter following Artie's suggestions.

Using Teleconverters with Telephoto Lenses with Arthur Morris - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bNM3nx-LQOA

This video appears to be beneficial. However, I'll have to watch it later. It's 1 hour +19 minutes long.

To me, it comes down to the image. Sometimes the TC lets me get a shot I couldn't otherwise get. My neighbor is an award winning photographer who usually shoots with a 400 mm prime and either a 1.4 or a 2x TC. One of his images was just selected by Audubon for the 2018 calendar. It's great to review all of the specs and charts and look at all of the reviews when deciding whether or not to buy a TC, but it does come down to the image. Regardless of what the charts and reviewers say about the TC, if the image is sharp, it's sharp. Much of it depends on the photographer's experience and how much practice has been put into using the gear.

I got great images last year on an African safari with my Canon 5D Mk3, 70-200 f/4 and 1.4 extender. Your photos should be even better. I got amazing resolution on very small sections of cropped images such as colorful birds, sharp crocodile teeth, hairs on leopard's head, etc.
Enjoy!

Here is the combination : 5D Mark IV, Canon 70-200mm f/2.8 II, Canon 2X Extender III. I am really impressed with the results. I tested it yesterday with great results. I really only need the extra reach for my Grandson's Sports, and wildlife while on vacation. I didn't want to spend the money on a100-400mm lens when I wouldn't be using it that often. On the 5D Mark IV, all 61 focus points can be used. My largest aperture is f/5.6. I'm a happy camper.

I don't have the 5D M IV, but I do mount that combo on my 5D MII and 7D MII. May I borrow or have your 5D M IV (please)? Good luck Tracy. For outdoor sports and wildlife it's a fantastic combo. Please post some images!!

Tony Northrup did a video once compairing the 100-400 and the 70-200 with the teleconverter. He said he thoughr the 70-200 w/tc was sharper. He even said he was going to sell his 100-400 lens.

I hear good things and understand the positives. I think someone with patients and a willingness to work with a teleconverter can do well with the right combination.

...for me I found the loss of light and the trade offs in focus/ sharpness outweighed the rate of return...Cropping offered me better results especially in good light with the 70-200/ f/2.8 IS II.

I do hope you succeed and post your results in the future. I may investigate again with the purchase of a long Prime because of the remarks on this post from others opinions.

Sounds like you have a lot of respect on the UHH...

When I was using Canon, I used a lot of TC's - Tamron SP 2X and 1.4X with Canon 70-200 f4 , Canon 2X II with 300 2.8, and Tamron SP 1.4X with Sigma 100-300. Also used the Tamron SP 2X with the Canon 80-200 2.8 and the 70-200 2.8 II - the results of all of these were very excellent ! (except for the light loss and slower AF ) - I do use monopods and facial stabilizers with all of them.

Today, I do not use any TC's - instead I use Sony Clear Image Zoom ( a form of cropping with pixel enlargement) - and I love it ! - it is a game changer ! ( with A77II and Sigma 100-300 f4 - other bodies and lenses, YMMV.)

I'd rather see your pictures than hear about your gear.

I just received it. I only had time to test it. I will post some pictures when my Grandsons baseball season starts. I was just excited about my findings of the TC. I listed my "gear" so UHH members would know the combination I was using.

...Don't wait get out there and test it. I think many would like to see the results.

Do a comprehensive crop vs teleconverter test for us. It would be good to hear your input on sharpness and usage...do something less challenging
to start. Wishing you success.
