Here is the combination : 5D Mark IV, Canon 70-200mm f/2.8 II, Canon 2X Extender III. I am really impressed with the results. I tested it yesterday with great results. I really only need the extra reach for my Grandson's Sports, and wildlife while on vacation. I didn't want to spend the money on a100-400mm lens when I wouldn't be using it that often. On the 5D Mark IV, all 61 focus points can be used. My largest aperture is f/5.6. I'm a happy camper.

Well, congratulations! It would be great if you would post some pics of your new lens/extender setup.

Best,

Jason

The optics are very capable ! - But beware, it will be the user's technique/management that will determine the final outcome .....

Congratulations Tracy B. Great story with a happy ending-YOU! Options were considered and researched, a decision was rendered, and action was taken. You have your desired out-come. Life is good.

I had one but sold it. I use to use it with my EF 400 f/5.6L and 70-200 f/2.8L but after I got the 100-400L II I sold the 400 prime and use the 100-400 with the 1.4 III. Best of luck with your new teleconverter, it's a really nice piece of glass.

I have the previous model of the 2X extender (II?) but have never got around to using it. Is the III version significantly improved?

I tried one for a few days and compared results with cropping with the same combination...

The crop images were sharper after comparing at least 100 shots.

I saw little value after considering the light loss...

Don't want to rain on the parade.... I hoped for better results but that's what I found.

I also did tests comparing crop shots with extender shots. I didn't see much of any difference. Maybe it's just my skill. Lol!

I never tired the (II) version, however, I have read that there is quite a difference.

I read somewhere, prob on this forum, that the v.II will function in some manner that v.III will not. Can't remember any more about it. Of course, I would expect v.III's optics to be improved.
