I am in it security and would caution anyone about TSA locks. The locks use a 3 or 4 number to lock (without the TSA key). These are similar to many compxuter locks (the ones that cable lock the computer to the desktop). We regularly played with these and I had a co!league who could sit with one and consistently unlock them o. Less than 10 min. (My best was 20 Min) with 4 digits. The TSA lock I am looking at has 3 digits. Now my colleague had lots of time to work his technique and he could break them during a meeting without anyone ware that he was fiddling with a lock. No he had no magic secret, he just had an approach to trying the combinations until it broke. Much like kids can text without looking at the keyboard on their phones. I spoke with him recently on this very subject and he told me ha has not had as TSA approved lock that he couild not open in 5 minutes. They are far from secure, despite what the kubki theater TSA wants you to believe. Note, I regularly have to carry 10ka worth of forensic computer equipment on plants that has to go in checked baggage (very large pelican cases), I have been very lucky that none of this has been stolen (most likely because the baggage handlers have no idea what the stuff is worth (can they recognize a scsi write blocker... Probvsbly not)), but I worry about it on every flight. When I can, I carry my camera equipment in my carry-on baggage, fortunately for other reasons I don't travel to any destination that may be covered by the latest govt restrictions. If I did, it would be for business, so I would just include my travel photo rif in the case with my other equipment. Always research restrictions on where you are travelling to and from and plan accordingly. Not trying to start any wars here, just stating my experience. The TSA locks are IMHO junk, and keep the honest people honest.. If yoiyoiu trust the locks, then caveat emptor

Bullethole,

I use TSA approved numbered key locks on my camera suitcase. Are there any issues regarding those locks?

I would guess baggage handlers as well. I just returned from Molokai, one of the least touristed (and most strikingly beautiful) of the Hawaiian islands. I used Kolumbo locks - one of the highest rated I could find. Everything went well until we left Molokai. The airport is tiny, no passenger jets, and only one TSA gate. I watched my checked bag go through screening, watched it be opened and manually searched, and finally watched it get relocked, put on the baggage trolley, and then on the small prop plane. You are so close to the process you can keep close track. When we landed in Honolulu, I watched the bag go on the trolley and in to the inter island terminal. In less than 3 minutes, I was picking my bag off the conveyer. The lock was gone, but nothing else was stolen. The same thing happened two years earlier upon leaving Molokai (yes, I dearly love that place) with a Tumi lock and again, nothing else was stolen. My theory is that some baggage handler for Ohana has a collection of TSA locks that he adds to when he sees new designs or different locks. In my opinion, the TSA folks had nothing to do with the lock theft. I would be very reluctant to check photo gear without great insurance and without carrying the filled cards on my person. I too, would like to know if the person who initiated this string had any suggestions.

So far my research is saying USPS can ship my items ahead of time to my residence in Norway for less than insurance added to checked in baggage.

Have you insured your equipment in the past?

All this Squamish about TSA and locks seems like the airlines don't care about photogs that travel to make fotos. TSA is not the problem it is the airlines and their crapy treatment of passengers. The airlines don't know a camera from a window seat. Airlines create their own problems and lay it on their customers. People are getting FED up with regulations and can't does. Time to go by train or car.

Nothing to do with photography. Appears to be paranoid ramblings aimed at Stirling people up.

Take adequate precautions everywhere, but some folks must spend their whole lives worrying the sky is about to fall.

Get a life!

For what you'll have to pay Fed Ex for this one time trip you could buy other good insurance that would more then likely cover you for a full year or more! Think about it!

But you won't have the equipment when you want to use them. You will have to buy all new equipment at that location.

No/yes. I've not had to because I haven't had to check photo equipment. However, I do have insurance with our household insurance carrier that supposedly covers travel but I've never had to use it. I think the idea of using USPS, UPS, or FEDEX is a good one.

Any suggestions on a company that can do that?

Well, that's gonna happen whether it gets stolen during travel or lost during shipment, isn't it?

Agree--these locks are to keep honest people honest. Really, all it would take is a regular pair of diagonal pliers and two seconds to snip through any luggage zipper pulls and the locked lock would be meaningless.

Katastrofa,

Forget what DaveO said. Some in the USA are a little Xenophobic as they haven't traveled much and don't have experiences with other cultures. Yes, there are those who hate the USA, but I would hope you aren't one of them. We are a proud (maybe too much so) of who we are and what we have accomplished and sometimes forget why we have been blessed as such. We forget that we are a nation that was built by many different peoples with many different languages and cultures that somehow melded into one country. We have our problems, I admit. Our pride is one them. We haven't seen the fratricide and hatred that other countries have seen until recently. So we are surprised and a little taken back by hatred that some show against us. But we will not back down from what we believe is right. While we are appalled by what we see as abuse by others based upon our norms, we also have sometimes backed tyrants that we shouldn't have because they purported to be our friends.

I would that all of us could understand each other better: our cultures and our belief systems, before we pass judgements. Until then, we will all continue to protect ourselves and our properties, many times in ways that actually exacerbates the issue instead of showing good judgement.

If you can live with this, come visit. Get to know us. I hope someday to do the same for you and your country.

I wouldn't buy all new equipment if I was out of the country because I wouldn't have a USA warranty. I'd rent or buy just enough to get some shots.

I have had issues with TSA and secured (locked by TSA approved padlock) luggage. We had electronic equipment stolen and TSA refused to reimburse us for the cost. I pack everything I can into carry on, doesn't keep them from robbing others but we can't stop it apparently.

I flew SFO to NYC a few years ago. I went through the security line like a good boy. At the end, I retrieved my wallet and being pushed and hurried, got dressed again. (Shoes, belt, money, glasses, etc.) I never really double-checked anything. When I got to NYC hotel, I discovered that two of my three credit cards were gone. A call to the bank showed that so was over $1000 of my money. The ONLY people to handle my wallet were TSA rent-a-guards. I wrote TSA, got back a form letter that I must be mistaken.
