Good question. Answer is yes. Just about everyone under 50 speaks some degree of English. While it might be hard to find English speakers in the mountains and among the elderly who did not have the opportunity to learn English under communism, it is almost a second language here. Slovenian is a unique language. It is spoken only by Slovenians. Croatians, next country, don't necessarily understand it. A Polish friend who speaks Polish, Ukrainian, English, and German said she cannot understand it and finds it difficult to make the sounds. Every time I've gone to a shop, bar, or restaurant in LJ there is no problem with English. When I first got here and asked, "govorite Angleško" the reply was oftentimes 'of course.' While it sounded a bit arrogant at first I realized it was the equivalent of the French, "mais oui," but of course.

Tourists need not be at all concerned about not being able to communicate. Many of the courses at the university are taught in English because of the large number of students from all over Europe who study here but don't speak Slovenian. And of course all medical workers understand and speak English.

One of the interesting facts about Slovenia is that even though tiny with a population of 2 million, there are multiple dialects of Slovenian, some of which are mutually unintelligible. The superior told me after I met his grandfather that if he spoke to me in Slovenian I would not understand a word. A few students pointed out something similar at a roadside stop on the way home from Hungary. The woman behind the counter was speaking a dialect they couldn't understand.
Good question. Answer is yes. Just about everyon... (show quote)

Thanks. I find languages and dialects and accents fascinating. I like to watch foreign movies, especially Scandinavian. I am always surprised when a character starts speaking perfect English.

I hope it's on Netflix. Nope. DVD only.

EDIT: Our library system has it, so I submitted a request. Thanks!

Netflix is a joke with foreign language films. Let me know what you think. Is absolutely exquisite. Won Best Foreign Film Oscar in '88 or '89. Will say no more at the moment.

Will do, but it could be a few weeks before I receive it.

This was a good year to come to Slovenia...

frjack, I was living in Ljubljana for thirty years, then moved abroad. I came back twenty years ago and settled in Maribor which I like even more. Well, until enjoying your contributions. Now I question myself - should I get back to Ljubljana or take some photos of Maribor that would convince me that moving here was the right decision

Your photos are always interesting and I enjoy reading your thoughts about Slovenia. I love #2, blossoms against the castle, and the shots of the river with the flowers.

I urge you to always take along your camera on those walks. I never leave home with out mine. I can take the same road many times and still find new things to photograph.

They're all excellent shots, Father Jack! That view of the river is stunning!

I haven't been to Maribor much this year. Last year it was twice weekly. This year I've only been there for two overnights, one of which was very shortly after arriving. Photographically Maribor is as fertile as LJ. Got some fine shots there. And I like the city. If I were to return to Slovenia after October and got sent to work in Maribor it would not be a bad thing. Now that the weather is improving I hope to find time to go up with out superior who visits the student residence weekly with the camera. The problem with Slovenia is that is has more great photo opportunities per square km than any other place I've been, which includes all continents. Living where we do, one block from the paved road leading to the castle, affords photo opportunities that would be impossible if I were in the community in Dravlje.

Can't argue with photos that include blossoms, water, and the outline of a castle. Tried a few with the silhouette of the cathedral from a different angle but the sun was a direct hit on the sensor. Thanks for commenting.

Thanks for comment and advice. I don't take the camera when I go on an 'aerobic walk' because I don't want to stop. I can only manage 2.5 or 3 miles given some neurologic realities. When it is a day for a 'stroll' especially on a Saturday or Sunday, then it is camera time.
