Forward the e-mails to spoof@paypal.com so they are aware of the scam.

Definitely NEVER give anyone who contacts you your SSN or credit card # or banking numbers. Do check with paypal - separately from this obviously fraudulent email - because companies like this usually have a department that likes to follow up when someone contacts their customers. Good luck.

PayPal a few days ago expressed regret that I'd cancelled my account. I hadn't.

After that email PayPal told me that my account had been "limited" due to supposed access from a user in Hong Kong. The email had several grammatical and spelling errors.

A link is furnished to fix things, it wants to confirm my SSN. I don't recall furnishing my SSN when I opened the account, I'm wary about furnishing it now. I've used PayPal for a number of purchases, but only one sale, for the amount of $10.00.

Has anyone else encountered this sort of thing from PayPal? Any suggestions?

It is a widespread PayPal scam. One sure way to know that the email is from the real PayPal is they will always begin the email by addressing you by the name you have your account registered with, and they will never ask you for money or personal information in an email, nor provide a "link" to log on with. PayPal has a scam center and you can forward the alleged scam to them and they will do their best to get it tracked down and eliminated.

Paypal does have an option to input your SS number on their site. I'd recommend NOT doing that. If I'm not mistaken, the SS number was created and was to be used solely for purposes involving SS related matters only. I believe this was part of the Freedom of Information Act passed in 1971. That may have changed, but I've not researched it.

Originally it was only legal to use your SSN for employment records (for collecting SS taxes) and SS benefits. You were NOT to use it for anything else. Wether the law changed or the gubmint just looks the other way IDK.

YES!!! That was a phishing email. You should forward it to spoof@paypal.com. I hope you did not answer it. I get them once in a while. I immediately send them to PayPal.

Many thanks to members who responded! On the advice of ... someone! ... I forwarded the possible spoof to spoof@paypal.com. I opened my PayPal account in a browser window and lo and behold! There had been a problem. They requested that I verify information that they already had from me, change my password, and all is well.
