PayPal a few days ago expressed regret that I'd cancelled my account. I hadn't.

After that email PayPal told me that my account had been "limited" due to supposed access from a user in Hong Kong. The email had several grammatical and spelling errors.

A link is furnished to fix things, it wants to confirm my SSN. I don't recall furnishing my SSN when I opened the account, I'm wary about furnishing it now. I've used PayPal for a number of purchases, but only one sale, for the amount of $10.00.

Has anyone else encountered this sort of thing from PayPal? Any suggestions?

Your instincts are correct. This is nothing more but a fishing attempt upon your financial structure. They ( whomever) are attempting to get your all important SS #. Ignore them.

To your question; I get these inquires all the time, Pay Pall, Banks, Stores, Doesn't matter. Same structure with the final request being for the SS#.

A phone call to PayPal would clear it up.

Ignore the messages. You are being setup for a royal scamming which could be devastating to your personal and financial security. PayPal does not communicate in that fashion. One dead give-away is the grammatical and spelling errors. Your suspicions are correct. Don't click on any links nor reply to the sender. Just permanently delete all of the messages.

If you didn't give a social security number when you opened the account, why would they want it now. It doesn't appear to be legitimate to. The Feds discovered that 500 million Yahoo email accounts had been hacked and tampered with from abroad. Arrests are in the process. I received a scam email just recently requesting that I send money to a foreign country, so I could lay claim to a large amount of money. Really!

DON'T GIVE THEM YOUR SS#!!!
They don't need it!
(Look at the links/email source - they most likely do not go to PayPal!)

Many thanks for the rapid replies! They confirm my suspicions. I logged into my account - which is still active, BTW - and there were no messages. I'll contact PayPal and apprise them of the scammers.

Good point! Always good to have antiviral programs up and running.
