Who is the photographer with the Cannon Photos you so admire? Perhaps he is ready to switch to Nikon and you two could strike a deal. I will stand by for your comments about your Cannon photos. Or perhaps it is as someone on this forum once observed, "It's not the bow and arrow, it's the Indian."

While certainly both Canon and Nikon are great cameras, I do have a tendency to agree with you.

Good Day All,

I have had a Nikon Equipment for years. Beautiful D300s. In the beginning it was simply a toss
of the coin on which camera line. The problem I am having is that I am always
comparing my photos against Cannon Photos. It always, and I do mean always feels to me
that Cannon has more vibrant and clear photos. I feel like Nikon is a softer, less dynamic
photo. I am never satisfied with my photos. Maybe I just have the "buy something new" bug.
I was wondering if I am the only one on the planet that does this?

Please tell me I am normal, lol...

What you need to do is conduct a double blind study. Have someone print a bunch of Canon & Nikon photos and have them code the back of the photos with a symbol on the back that only he knows which id's Canon or Nikon. Have them mix the photos well and number them on the front. When you get the stack of photos, identify each photo you think is either Nikon or Canon on a sheet of paper numbered to correspond to the number of pictures. Do not look at the back of the pictures even though the symbol there does not tell you the origin of photo. When you're done, have that person reveal which symbol denotes which camera. Then you'll know (subject to printing technique & printer, lens used and a host of other variables). Other than that, buy a Sony a7xx and some GM lenses or a6500 and you can use all your old Nikon and Canon lenses and not get arm cramps and a sore neck hefting those Nikon & Canon beasts around.

If you shoot raw and learn to post process, you will no longer be "frustrated".

YES!

You may need to understand your editing software and what YOU may do with it.

ALWAYS use RAW and work the image into a Final Print.

Remember YOU are the Photographic Artist. --- Not that "Box around your neck".

You are so correct. I shoot mostly with a D810. I have a friend who shoots with a top of the Line Canon. The end results are always who made the better exposure under the shooting conditions. Often the images come out differently but I couldn't ever say one is better than the other. One time we compared settings and you really couldn't tell the difference (I thought mine was better). I will state that I think the new Nikon 70-200 FL appears to have greater dynamic results and it gives back button focusing a totally new game with the 4 focus buttons on the lens.

The images from cameras from both mfgrs can be made to be identical, or as different as night and day depending on what the settings are (for jpeg), or what choices you make when using a raw file to create the image.

I sometimes use a second shooter on events, and she uses a Canon 5D Mk III. I use a Nikon D800. She has a color checker as do I, and we generate camera calibrations using an Xrite Color Checker Passport - and you cannot tell which camera took which picture after the profiles have been applied.

Are you still shooting with Nikon D300's? If so, those camera bodies are getting a little long in tooth and perhaps you are comparing picture from your camera that is 10+ years old to cameras that are much newer and have better sensors, less noise and more bells and whistles. I shoot Canon and have nothing against Nikon. Some of my best friends shoot Nikon and they get fantastic images too. I recently went to my club meeting where they had a 15 minute speaker that has only been a photographer for 1 1/2 years. She uses a Canon point and shoot camera but she shoots all the time. She has a collection of 20,000 images (keepers) that she has done in that little of time. She had a slide show and had a really eclectic plethora of images that were very good. In fact, she entered a few into galleries and did win best photo at one of them. So the quality of the camera probably isn't really the issue here.

What you see is what you see. What I see is that in terms of overall image quality, Nikon wins. But that's just me.

That's why I choose Nikon "...back in the day..".
I own both plus Sony and rather think the Canon ergonomics are a bit better than the others, but best IQ is my target and once the learning curve has been climbed, you are there.

I've never known anyone who can tell by looking at a photo...what camera it was took with. However, I do recognize people have a big part of post processing. That's what makes the difference. More the processor than the camera.

Are you comparing you images to D300s era Canon Cameras, or newer models? What post processing do you do to your images? There are so many variables in this question it impossible to give an answer.

Yes, it is normal to covet Canons! Nothing makes you feel more superior than a huge white lens!!! LoL
Just switch but keep the old Nikon.
In 3 months, you'll know, then keep the system that works best for you!!!

Even though we shoot photos for more than a decade, or three, we can always learn something more. Check out local camera club members and go on a local photo shoot. Compare settings. Compare results. Make sure your eyes are working properly (clean glasses, clean lenses).

Maybe you just have a bit of the doldrums because winters are so long. See what sets the other photographers apart from you. See if you can make changes to catch up. We've all doubted ourselves at one time or another. Unfortunately, we are our own worst critic.

I've been shooting with a D3, D300, & D300s for years and just bought a D500. There is an amazing difference in the image as well as usable ISO range. The D300s is a great camera, but cameras today seem to be like computers in that the newer models are showing definite technological improvements.
