I know the main differences between the two. Is it better to grow into 7 or really stretch self and go for mark2. This is the last upgrade I will make so want to make the right choice. Like the speed on 7, but is full frame really better. I have a 40D now.
Thoughts? I do know a few of my lens I will not be able to use on M2 . is the 28-135 a full frame ? It is only the s lens that will not wk, right? Thanks for one more question about "WHICH?"

What do you mainly shoot, wildlife or landscape? For wildlife the 7D is becoming the "standard" for now (for Canon). Better focusing and faster fps. For portriat and landscape the 5D would be better being a full frame. If you shoot both and want full frame make sure you get the Mark III, not the II. The III has better focusing features and faster fps than the II.

EF-S lenses will not work on full frame. If switching from compact lenses are always an issue and could add quite a bit to the cost of going full frame. I never buy an EF-S lens, don't want my lenses to tie me down so to speak.

i have the 7d and just recently sold my 5dm2. the autofocus on the 5d was just tooooo slow in low light. i rented a 5dmk3 for 3 days and it was a nice camera. the shots in very high iso were great.

i love my 7d. i don't have a complaint on it. the full frame on the 5dmk2 was nice. if you don't have it, you don't miss it. i have done lots of events and a couple of weddings with the 7d and i sure didn't miss a shot.

next i am renting a nikon d800 and a 24-70 lens to make comparisons.

i will never get rid of my 7d...so i could very well end up a "hybrid" shooter if the d800 knocks me out.

i have no bias towards either brand.

all the brands take great photos outdoors...what i am looking for is the ability to take fabulous shots in very low light with 2.8 lenses.

the 1dmk10 has dual digic5 image processors. the 7d has dual dig4 image processors.

i am in no hurry because i am very satisfied with my 7d. i have the canon battery grip on it, so taking vertical shots is very comfortable. i love the feel of the 7d.

we'll see what happens. i am retiring in 23 months, so i need to get my camera gear in order while i can afford it.

so the moral of this post is i would take the 7d over the 5dmk2 (and i can say that because i had both at the same time for comparisons). depending on what you shoot or how you shoot..the 5dmk2 might be the winner for you, it just wasn't for me.

If you're seriously considering the purchase of a new camera, my advice, FWIW, would be to wait until after Photokina in September. There's a possibility that Canon will come out with a 7D upgrade at that time. You can follow the rumors on www.canonrumors.com.

CETW,
The defining statement is " the last upgrade" you can never go wrong with a full frame camera. As a working pro I can shoot anything with any camera, hell Karl Lagerfeld shot a fashion show with a Kodak Instamatic 110, the photos were magnificent. Last one, get the 5D Mark III.

I have a 7D and a 5D Mk 2. While the 7D is a very good camera, it lacks the IQ of the full sensor 5D. If you can't afford the 5D Mk 3, then I recommend the Mark 2.

Go for the 5D. You will never be happy if you think you got 2nd best. But in a hort time the 5D will not be the best. - Dave

I have shot tons of sports and there is no comparison between the 40D and the 7D, speed, focus quickness/accuracy etc...so for sports shooters, unless you can step into an upper crust 1D series body, the 7D is a fabulous camera, especially when matched with a 70-200 2.8!

Thank you all so much for your input,I lean toward wildlife and moving grands, but also I want to take night time pictures sooo it is hard to make a choice. Just have to choose which I do more of, which leans to 7D. Think I will wait til Sept and see if there is an update on 7D in Sept,in Germany? What do you think?

I don't think you will go wrong with any of the cameras you are considering. I have been using a 50D for 3+years and found it to be a good camera to learn on. I have learned it short comings and am ready to step up to the 5D MK3. Buy the best you can afford then push it to it's limits. I also believe there will be an update to the 7D because it has been a number of years since it's introduction. So good decision to wait.

The big thing is deciding what you are going to shoot most. I think you have decided that already.

Yes, I think it is due, it was introduced Sep 1, 2009. My fear is that they will do like they did to the 50D to 60D. A lot of changes and not all for the better,at least not for what I wanted.

Actually the 50D to the 7D did what i wanted.

I just got the 7D and it is so involved I figure it is going to take me a long time to learn everything it can do. I also think it will do everything I will ever want to do.
I think the big advantage in waiting to see if they anounce an 8D is the 7D MIGHT drop a little in price. If it does it won't be much, the 7D has become very popular.

When Canon came out with the 60D it did very little to hurt the value of the 50D. If anything it locked the 50D's value in solid.

updating a camera body or a lens isn't always what it's cracked up to. if they update the 7d...what are they going to improve?..only 2 things could make the 7d better than what it is and that's dual digic5 processors instead of dual dig4 processors.......and maybe getting great shots with a usable 10,000 to 12,000 ISO. other than that. i don't see anything else in an update that would make me pay a price difference between the 7d now and an updated new version.
