If you only do simple type adjustments and Photo Gallery on your Win 7 PC satisfied your needs, you do not need sophisticated and costly software. However, if you want to advance your skills and do more advanced post processing, you have already received many good suggestions.

Not sure exactly how you were using Windows Photo Gallery.... if it was just for organizational purposes you can actually do a lot of that without it, in Windows Explorer with it's various size "icon" previews. On it's own, Explorer cannot display some types of image files (i.e., RAW such as Canon CR2). However, install a $10 FastPictureViewer codec and you'll be able to see small previews of virtually every type of image file within Explorer (including CR2 and most other RAW file types). With this, you might not need any sort of organizer/manager, depending upon how you handle file storage on your computer. If interested, http://www.fastpictureviewer.com/codecs/ (They also offer a more advanced viewer/previewer FastPictureViewer Pro... for $50. You can read about it at their website.)

There are other organizing and editing softwares available. Those are just the ones I'm most familiar with.

Just to add to Alan's excellent summary, there is still the Canon raw Codec, which is free and displays .CR2 files in File Explorer. It isn't supported on Windows 10, but the Windows 7 version works just fine on Windows 10.

PSP is Corel Paint Shop Pro. It does almost everything that

Photoshop does. If you get Corel Aftershot Pro, it does everything that Lightroom does. You can get both programs for under $100.

I have it on a new machine and my upgraded W7. At one point after the update I had to reinstall on the W7 machine and it is still there

I didn't know it til I checked because of this post. I never use it.

No. It is time to look at Affinity Photo. Easier to learn and use and very reasonably priced. https://affinity.serif.com/blog/affinity-photo-for-windows-is-available-now/ AP has been available for Macs for a year or more, but the Windows version is excellent.

Hi Steve,
Another application to take a look at is Capture One. You can get a 30 day free trial version of it and see what you think. You can also find a lot of free videos about it on the Internet. Capture One is the software owned by Phase One. You can either subscribe to the software or purchase it outright, which is always my choice.

I run the application on my iMac, having migrated from Aperture, and like it much better than the Adobe products I tried, but that is just personal preference.

Good luck on the migration to a new program. Phase One offers a lot of free webinars and videos, plus the expected application support. You will probably find more people using LR and PS, if you need local assistance, but there is also a fairly large installed base of Capture One users, although they tend to be some of the high end photographers using medium format cameras.

Just thought I'd give you another option.

Alan

Windows 10 Photos is quite good and it has some basic but good editing tools, you try Google Photos which is free and has a very good editor and organiser.

I have about 10m different photo editing programs that offer different options and I will NEVER NEVER NEVER be without IRFANVIEW. EASY program to use. It doesn't do layers but if you make it your default editor, it will always have any picture you click on already loaded and ready to enhance any way you pleas including "gama correction" which most do not have. It lightens, darkens, crops, re-sizes, straightens, contrasts, changes to Black and white, sepia, other effects, sharpens, has a lot of filters....etc...etc. Then you can take your time finding a program that does layers. I use Microsoft Digital Image Suite 10 more than any other. You can find it used on ebay and it works for anything you want to do without much learning curve at all.

I got a yearly sub to Photoshop CC / Lightroom CC. (on Amazon. It was cheaper than Adobe!)
I'd never used Lightroom before -- I am addicted. (I've been a long time Photoshop user.)

I don't know if getting LR was a good, or a bad thing! I play WAY too much with it...

PSP... used to be Paint Shop Pro and was a strong competitor to PhotoShop. Don't know if that is still the case.

I've been using Photoshop Elements and have been very happy with it. It allows me to edit and process my pictures easily.

Agree with Bob. Paint Shop Pro can do anything that Photoshop does but it's easier to learn.

PSP is a very good program. There is also GIMP, which is free, and very similar to Photoshop (takes a lot of the filters, too)
For viewing / sorting through, I use FastStone Image Viewer (free), which I've grown to love a lot.
I used to use ACDSee, but something happened (I think something wasn't compatible) and I ditched it.
