Is there anything in a DSLR (Sensor) that would considered hazardous waste? Do I just put it in the garbage? it is completely nonworking, over 12 years old and not an expensive camera to begin with.

Your local community has an electronic recycling station. Be responsible and take it there for disposal.

Take it to an e-waste facility. The better ones strip things for parts etc. One here in my area advertises that old but still functioning tech is sent to overseas dealers in places where that old tech is still used.

Yes. Almost all electronic products today are an environmental disaster waiting to happen. Your local government or a local non-profit probably has a location where you can deposit it for recycling.

Having said that, the digital camera is far less environmentally damaging than we used to be with our film and chemicals. I hate to think of my contribution to polluting the rivers near my home.

or put it on ebay, there are always people looking for parts. you'll be doing them a favor and may make enough to but a new strap and cup of coffee

My local Target store has set up a recycle container at the entrance specifically for customers to dispose of their unwanted cell phones, mp3 players and digital cameras. Although I have yet to spot a DSLR in there, I do see old/broken pocket-size cameras occasionally.

What brand?
Not sure about now but in years past you needed to send a still camera to Canon to use the loyalty still program and take advantage of the discount, above and beyond the refurb price. Maybe other brands do the same?! Just saying!

Or carry it as a decoy for theft!!!
But you won't need a decoy if it's a Nikon!!!

Come on, the camera is not a toxic waste. A few pieces of plastic, some metal, and a few wires and printed circuit boards. Just through it in the garbage.

Yes. Recycle, recycle, recycle. Where I am, L.A. Co, CA, I have little choice. We are supposed to separate out our eWaste and have it recycled. And there are Rare elements in most of the IC components that in recycled bulk have value.

Not correct. What do you think are in ICs in addition to Silicon Dioxide? Many rare and some toxic chemical elements. And in many places it is The Law to recycle eWaste.
