This post is an experiment on many levels. 1) The photo is of a friend's mare shot in mid-day sun yesterday with the new Tamron f/2.8 70-200mm lens (Christmas present from a very kind hubby). 2) The computer is one I'm still not comfortable with but has replaced the one that crashed in August. 3) My editing software is Elements 13, purchased a while ago, but it's also still out of my comfort zone. New Year, new toys, new struggles. I had planned to get through some of these challenges a year ago. What can I say? I procrastinated. So here I am, almost ready to see how far I can throw the computer before I look for a new hobby.

Hi, Vic! I love the colours and the exposure, but I am concerned as to why, with that lens, is the horse, even with good stop action, not any sharper? Did you use a shake reduction in post? Just nit - picking is all.

Tom

Oh, how did you like all of the comma's in just one sentence?

No, no, no, Vicki don't throw away your computer (or camera) I think these ar very nice horse shots. They show great definition of the horses muscle tone in every shot.

All your problems with new lens, computer, etc didn't seem to bother the horse. Sounds like Windows 10 withdrawal syndrome. Don't worry, if I can get it, you surely can. Just a nick off focus. Might be a lens adjustment??? Your shots are always worth a second look. djt

#2 looks like the focus might have been on the fence. f/2.8 is extremely shallow depth of field, so assuming the horse was willing to keep going round and round, I'd have backed off that 1/4000 sec, and tried to get more dof. Panning with the horse going across in front of you like that is a difficult challenge in itself!

Exposure and pp look good. You are a determined, courageous woman to take on all those challenges at once

These are sufficiently sharp Vicki to have good eye appeal. That's the cardinal virtue. They all show action.
Also, and most important, they are all practice, practice, practice.

A tip of the hat to Santa

Thanks for taking time to give a helpful critique Tom. I was surprised to discover there's a bit of a learning curve with the new lens - for me anyway. I think the image is soft because I used the f/2.8 setting in ap priority. I could easily have gone to f/8 to get better dof and still had plenty of shutter speed. My other excuse...the lens is a bit heavy and might have benefitted from a tripod. Back to the "drawing board."

BTW Good use of ,,,,,,!

Thanks Earl. The lens will be good, I think, once I learn how to get the most from it. The mare is a 7 yr. old TB dressage prospect that a friend bought last summer. Now and then, she's allowed to get out and just be a horse, kicking up her heels and rolling in the sand (or in this case, mud). Crossed with your Bobby, she'd produce a beautiful Anglo-Arab foal, but the owner is thinking about using a warmblood stallion at some point.
